How to Structure Your Service Menu So AI Assistants Understand It
A clear, text-based list of services and prices helps AI assistants answer questions like ‘does this salon do balayage?’ Here is how to structure it.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
To help AI assistants understand your services, publish your service menu as plain HTML text on your website, with one clear name, a short description, duration and price for each item. Avoid menus that exist only as images or PDFs. Add structured data that matches the visible text, and keep the same details on your directory profiles.
Why menus matter for AI answers
Customers ask assistants very specific questions: “Does any spa in Nice offer couples massage under €150?”, “Which garage near me does air-con regas?”, “How much is a teeth whitening session at [clinic]?” An assistant can only answer well if it finds your services written clearly. If your menu is a photo of a printed price list, there is little for it to read.
Use names customers actually say
Internal names like “Signature Ritual No. 3” mean nothing to a buyer or an AI. Use the common name first and your brand name second, for example “Deep tissue massage (60 min) – our Signature Ritual”. Include common alternative terms in the description, such as “highlights” and “balayage” for a hair salon.
A simple structure for each item
- Service name in a heading or bold text
- One or two sentences on what it includes and who it suits
- Duration where relevant
- Price or price range, with what changes the price
- Availability notes, such as “weekdays only” or “at our Dublin location”
Group services into logical categories with <h2> or <h3> headings, such as “Hair colour” or “Brake services”.
Add structured data that matches
Schema.org lets you mark up services and prices so machines can read them reliably. Common options include Service and Offer, and for restaurants Menu and MenuItem. The key rule: structured data must match what visitors see on the page. Our guide on schema markup for AI understanding covers setup basics.
Keep it consistent everywhere
Many assistants combine your site with map listings and booking platforms. If your website says a cut costs €45 but your booking page says €38, the assistant may give either. Update prices in all places at the same time. If prices change often, use ranges and note the date of the last update. Related advice is in our page on price lists AI can understand.
Add a short FAQ under the menu
Answer questions your staff hear every day:
- Do you accept walk-ins?
- Is a consultation needed before this service?
- Do you offer packages or gift cards?
- Which services are available for children?
These short answers are easy for assistants to quote.
Quick checklist
- Menu is text, not only an image or PDF
- Common service names used
- Prices or ranges shown
- Categories with headings
- Structured data matches visible text
- Same details on booking and map profiles
Special cases
Restaurants should list dishes with dietary notes such as vegan, gluten-free or halal, since diners ask AI exactly those questions. Clinics should separate consultation fees from treatment fees. Trades such as plumbers or electricians can list typical jobs with starting prices and what affects the final quote, like call-out time or materials.
