How ChatGPT decides which brands to recommend
When someone asks ChatGPT “what is the best tool for X?”, it does not look at ads or paid rankings. It builds its answer from two sources: what it learned during training, and, when browsing is on, live web results it reads in real time. A brand gets recommended when it appears often, clearly and consistently in the places those answers come from.
1. Be easy to find on the open web
ChatGPT’s browsing mode uses a search index to pick pages to read. If your site is not indexed, slow, or blocked for AI crawlers in robots.txt, it cannot be quoted. Check that OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are allowed and that your key pages are in Google and Bing.
2. Answer the exact question your buyers ask
AI assistants quote passages that answer a question directly. A page titled “Best CRM for small accounting firms” with a clear 2–3 sentence answer at the top is far more likely to be cited than a generic homepage. Write one focused page per real question, and put the answer first.
3. Get mentioned on sites AI already trusts
Models learn from comparison articles, review sites, Reddit threads, YouTube descriptions and industry blogs. Being listed in “top 10” roundups, answering questions in communities and earning honest reviews gives the model more evidence that your brand belongs in the answer.
4. Keep your brand facts consistent
Use the same company name, description, prices and category everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, directories and press. Add structured data (Organization and Product schema) so machines can read these facts without guessing. Inconsistent facts make AI less likely to name you, or make it describe you wrongly.
5. Measure, then improve
Ask ChatGPT the 10–20 questions your customers really ask, every week, and note whether you appear and which sources it cites. Those cited sources show you exactly where to get mentioned next.
