🔵 For businesses that want more customers from AI search
What Is Schema Markup and How Does It Help AI Understand You?
A plain-English introduction to schema markup for business owners: what it is, why machines need it, and which types to start with.

Schema markup is a small piece of code that labels the facts on your web page, such as “this is our business name”, “this is a price” or “these are our opening hours”. People can read a page and understand it, but machines have to guess. Schema removes the guessing, which helps search engines and the AI tools that rely on them describe your business correctly.
A simple way to picture it
Imagine your page says “Open 9 to 5, closed Sundays, call 04 91 00 00 00”. A human knows what each part means. A machine sees a string of words and numbers. Schema adds invisible labels: openingHours, telephone, and so on. It is like adding name tags at a meeting so nobody mixes people up.
The labels come from a shared vocabulary at schema.org, created by the major search engines together. Most sites add it as JSON-LD, a block of code that sits in the page and does not change how it looks.
Why this matters for AI
AI assistants answer questions using two things: what they learned in training, and what they find on the web when they search live. Google AI Overviews use Google’s index. Copilot uses Bing. ChatGPT and Perplexity can search the web and read pages. In each case, a page with clear structure and clear labels is easier to read correctly.
Schema is not a ranking button. It will not make an assistant recommend you on its own. Think of it as reducing errors: fewer wrong prices, fewer mixed-up locations, less confusion between your brand and a similar name.
The first types most businesses need
- Organization: your official name, logo, website and social profiles. Every business should have this on the homepage.
- LocalBusiness: for shops, clinics, restaurants and offices with an address. Includes hours, phone and location. There are more specific versions such as Dentist or Restaurant.
- Product: for anything you sell online, with price and stock status.
- Article: for blog posts and guides, with author and date.
- FAQPage: for pages with a genuine list of questions and answers.

Is AI recommending your competitors instead of you?

An everyday example
A small bakery in Ghent has a website that mentions “Boulangerie du Port” in the footer, a different spelling on Instagram and old hours on a directory. Adding Organization and LocalBusiness schema with the correct name, hours and links to the official Instagram page gives machines one clear version of the facts. The bakery should still fix the directory, but the website now acts as a reliable reference.
How to add it without coding
If you use WordPress, plugins like Yoast SEO or Rank Math add the basic types from a settings screen. Shopify themes often include Product markup already. Wix and Squarespace add some markup automatically. For anything extra, free schema generators let you fill in a form and copy the code. Always test the result with Google’s Rich Results Test.
What schema cannot do
It cannot make a thin page useful, fix a poor reputation or replace reviews and mentions on other sites. AI tools recommend businesses that are clearly described and well regarded across the web. Schema helps with the first part. For a deeper check of what you already have, use our schema audit checklist, and for the bigger picture read how large language models discover and trust brands.
