Technical Setup: Make Your Website Readable for AI Assistants
Before content can help, AI tools must be able to load and parse your site. This technical checklist covers crawling, rendering, markup and speed.

To optimize a website for AI assistants, start with the technical basics: let the right crawlers in, serve your main text as plain HTML, describe your business with structured data, and keep pages fast and stable. If an assistant’s search system cannot load and read a page, the quality of the writing on it does not matter.
1. Review Your robots.txt
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and read it line by line. Look for rules that block whole sections, or bots you never meant to block. AI companies use named crawlers, and several separate their training bot from their live search bot, so you can make different choices for each. Also confirm that Bingbot and Googlebot are allowed, since Copilot builds on Bing and Google’s AI features build on Google Search. The AI crawler user agent list names the common bots.
2. Check Firewalls and Bot Protection
Security tools and CDNs sometimes block unknown bots automatically, even when robots.txt allows them. Look at your firewall or CDN settings for “bot fight” or “block AI scrapers” options and make a deliberate decision. Check your server logs to see whether search crawlers are receiving normal responses or error codes.
3. Serve Content Without Heavy JavaScript
Some crawlers do not run JavaScript fully. If your product descriptions, prices or FAQ answers only appear after scripts load, they may be invisible. Quick test: view the page source (not the inspector) and search for a sentence from the page. If it is missing, ask your developer about server-side rendering or pre-rendering for key pages.
4. Use Clean, Meaningful HTML
- One
h1per page, thenh2andh3in a logical order - Real lists and tables instead of styled divs
- Descriptive link text instead of “click here”
- Important text as text, not inside images or sliders
- No content hidden behind tabs that only load on click, for essential facts
5. Add Structured Data
Schema.org markup in JSON-LD format helps machines understand what a page is about. Useful types for most businesses include Organization or LocalBusiness, Product, Service, FAQPage and Article. Only mark up what is visible on the page and true. Test your markup with a validator after each change. See schema markup for AI understanding.
6. Keep Sitemaps and Canonicals Tidy
Submit an XML sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Remove redirected and deleted pages from it. Set canonical tags so duplicate versions of a page, such as tracking URLs or print views, point to one main address.
7. Watch Speed and Stability
Crawlers have limited time per site. Slow servers, frequent timeouts and long redirect chains mean fewer pages get fetched. Fix broken links and 5xx errors first, then work on load time.
About llms.txt
Some sites add an llms.txt file that lists key pages for language models. It is a community proposal, not a standard that the major assistants have committed to. It is cheap to add, but do not expect it to replace the steps above.
