Technical SEO for AI crawlers makes sure the bots used by AI tools can reach your pages, read the text and understand what each page is about. The main checks are: crawler rules in robots.txt, firewall and CDN settings, content that appears in the raw HTML, fast and stable pages, up-to-date sitemaps, Bing indexing and clean structured data. Access does not guarantee a mention, but blocking access almost guarantees you will not be used.

1. Know Which Crawlers Exist

AI companies run different bots for different jobs. Some collect training data, others fetch pages for live search, and others fetch a page when a user asks. Examples include GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User from OpenAI, ClaudeBot from Anthropic, PerplexityBot, and the Google-Extended token, which controls use of content for some Google AI models without affecting Google Search. Check each company’s documentation, since names change. Our AI crawler user-agent list keeps them in one place.

2. Decide Your Policy and Set robots.txt

Some businesses allow search-type bots but block training bots; others allow all. That is a business decision. Whatever you choose:

  • Write explicit rules per user agent rather than relying on a broad block.
  • Do not block CSS or JavaScript files needed to render content.
  • Re-check after site migrations, which often reset robots.txt.

3. Check Firewalls and CDNs

Many bot protection services can block AI crawlers by default or through a single toggle. Review your CDN and security settings, and check server logs for 403 or 429 responses to AI user agents. A robots.txt that allows a bot means little if the firewall rejects it.

4. Make Content Visible Without JavaScript

Not every crawler runs JavaScript fully. Test by viewing the page source or fetching it with a simple command such as curl. If your main text, prices or product details are missing, use server-side rendering or pre-rendering for those pages.

5. Keep Pages Fast and Stable

  • Return correct status codes: 200 for live pages, 301 for moved pages, 404 or 410 for removed ones.
  • Avoid long redirect chains.
  • Fix timeouts and server errors that show up in logs.
  • Do not hide key content behind cookie walls or pop-ups that block the page.

6. Sitemaps and Indexing

  1. Keep XML sitemaps current, with accurate lastmod dates.
  2. Submit them in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  3. Use IndexNow if your platform supports it, to notify Bing of changes.
  4. Use canonical tags to avoid duplicate versions competing.

7. Structured Data and Clean HTML

Use semantic headings, real lists and tables, and descriptive link text. Add JSON-LD for Organization, Product, Article and similar types where they match visible content. See schema markup for AI visibility for what it can and cannot do.

8. Monitor Over Time

Review server logs monthly for AI user agents: which pages they request, how often, and what status codes they get. A sudden drop often points to a new block or error.

Common Problems Found in Audits

  • A staging site’s robots.txt copied to production, blocking all bots.
  • A security plugin rate-limiting every unknown user agent.
  • Product prices loaded only after a script runs.
  • Old sitemaps listing pages that now redirect or return errors.

Each of these is quick to fix once found.
