Tools to Check Whether Your Content Is Ready for LLM Citation
Before content can be cited, it has to be reachable, readable and clear. These free and common tools help you audit a page before you publish.

Several common tools can tell you whether a page is ready to be cited by AI systems: crawl and indexing checkers show if machines can reach it, structured data validators check your markup, readability tools show if the answer is clear, and a simple manual test in AI assistants shows whether the page’s main point comes across. None of them guarantees a citation, but together they catch the problems that make citation unlikely.
1. Access and Indexing Tools
If a crawler cannot reach your page, nothing else matters.
- Google Search Console: the URL Inspection tool shows if Google has indexed the page and how it sees it. Google’s AI features rely on Google’s index.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: the same idea for Bing, which matters because Copilot uses Bing.
- Your robots.txt file: open
yoursite.com/robots.txtand check you are not blocking crawlers you want to allow. Some AI companies publish the names of their crawlers, so you can decide which to allow. - A site crawler: desktop crawling tools can find broken links, redirect chains and pages missing from your sitemap.
2. Rendering Checks
Some sites load their text with JavaScript after the page opens. Not every crawler runs JavaScript well. A quick test: view the page source in your browser (not the inspector) and search for a sentence from your main text. If it is not there, crawlers may not see it either. The URL Inspection tool’s rendered view also helps.
3. Structured Data Validators
- Google’s Rich Results Test: checks markup types Google supports.
- Schema.org’s validator: checks any schema.org markup for errors.
Use them to confirm your Organization, Article, Product or FAQ markup is valid and matches the visible content. For what to mark up, see schema markup for AI understanding.
4. Readability and Clarity Tools
Readability checkers built into many writing apps highlight long sentences, passive voice and jargon. Aim for short sentences and plain words. Then do one manual test: read only the first three sentences of your page. Do they answer the question on their own? If not, rewrite them.
5. The “Ask the Assistant” Test
Paste your page’s text into an AI assistant and ask: “In one sentence, what question does this page answer, and what is the answer?” If the summary is wrong or vague, your page is probably unclear to machines too. This does not affect how the assistant ranks you; it is just a clarity check.
6. Fact and Link Checking
- Use a broken link checker to find dead source links.
- List every number on the page and confirm each has a source or comes from your own records.
- Check that prices, dates and product names match your current offer.
A Simple Pre-Publish Routine
- Run the readability check and fix the first three sentences.
- Validate structured data.
- Publish, then inspect the URL in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Confirm the main text is in the page source.
- Link the page from at least two related pages.
Once content is live, you need different tools to track whether it is actually cited; see our overview of LLM citation tracking tools.
