🔵 For businesses that want more customers from AI search
Types of Tools for LLM Citation Tracking: An Overview
From manual checks to dedicated platforms, there are several ways to track AI citations. Here is an overview of each tool type and when it makes sense.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
There are four main types of tools for tracking LLM citations: manual checks with a spreadsheet, web analytics that show traffic referred by AI tools, dedicated AI visibility platforms that run prompts across assistants automatically, and classic brand and media monitoring that catches the sources AI tends to use. Most businesses combine two or three. The right mix depends on how many prompts you care about and how much time you have.
1. Manual Tracking
What it is: you ask a fixed list of questions in each assistant and record the results.
Good for: getting started, small businesses with a few key prompts, and learning how assistants talk about your market.
Limits: time-consuming, hard to keep consistent, and answers vary between runs. Our guide on how to monitor AI citations explains a manual method step by step.
2. Web Analytics Referrals
What it is: your analytics tool (for example Google Analytics or a privacy-friendly alternative) shows visits that come from AI services when they pass referral information, such as clicks from Perplexity or ChatGPT links.
Good for: seeing which pages actually get clicks from AI answers.
Limits: only shows clicks, not mentions without a click. Some AI traffic arrives with no referrer and looks like direct traffic. Create a segment or filter for known AI referral domains to make this easier to read.
3. Search Engine Webmaster Tools
What it is: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools show indexing and search performance.
Good for: confirming your pages are indexed, which matters because AI features in Google and Copilot draw on these indexes.
Limits: they report search data in general and do not give a full picture of which AI answers cite you.

4. Dedicated AI Visibility Platforms
What it is: software that runs your chosen prompts across several assistants on a schedule and records mentions, citations, positions and competitors.
Good for: consistent tracking of many prompts, competitor comparison, history and reports.
Limits: results are samples of answers that vary, so look at trends. Quality differs between vendors, so ask how prompts are run and how often. See our buyer’s guide to AI citation software.
5. Brand and Media Monitoring
What it is: tools that alert you when your brand is mentioned in news, blogs, reviews or social media.
Good for: spotting the third-party sources that AI assistants often draw on, and catching inaccurate information early.
Limits: they track the web, not AI answers directly.
Which Combination to Choose
- Just starting: manual tracking of 10 to 20 prompts plus an analytics segment for AI referrals.
- Growing business: a dedicated platform for prompts and competitors, analytics for traffic, and webmaster tools for indexing.
- Brand with a lot of press: add media monitoring to understand which coverage feeds AI answers.
What No Tool Can Do
No tracking tool can see inside a model or tell you exactly why it chose a source. And no tool can make an assistant cite you. Tracking tells you where you stand so you can decide what to improve.
