How to Get Featured in Google AI Overviews: A Step-by-Step Guide
A practical, step-by-step process to create pages that Google AI Overviews can understand, trust and cite, from choosing questions to tracking results.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
To get featured in Google AI Overviews, you need a page that is indexed, clearly answers a specific question near the top, and is backed by detail and trust signals. There is no form to apply and no paid option. You improve your chances by making your page the clearest, most useful answer for that question.
Step 1: Find questions that trigger AI Overviews
Start with real questions from your customers: sales calls, emails, support tickets and reviews. Search each one in Google and note which ones show an AI Overview. “How often should a commercial kitchen hood be cleaned” is a good target for a cleaning company. “Kitchen cleaning” is too broad. Keep a simple list with the question, whether an Overview shows and which sites are cited.
Step 2: Study what is being cited
Open the cited pages. Look at how long their answers are, whether they use lists or tables and how specific they get. You are not copying them. You are learning what level of detail Google seems to want for that question, so your page can do it better.
Step 3: Write a quotable opening
Put a 2 to 3 sentence answer right under the heading. Make it complete on its own. For example: “Most commercial kitchen hoods need professional cleaning every three to six months. High-volume kitchens using a lot of oil may need it monthly.” Then explain the details below.
Step 4: Build out the rest of the page
- Use headings that match the follow-up questions people ask.
- Add steps, ranges, comparisons or a short checklist where they help.
- Include a real example from your work.
- Show who wrote it and when it was last updated.
Step 5: Add structured data
Add schema markup that fits the page, such as Article, HowTo-style content in plain HTML, Product or LocalBusiness. Schema helps search engines understand what the page is about and who is behind it. It is not a switch that turns on AI Overviews, but it removes doubt. Our guide to schema markup for AI understanding explains the basics.
Step 6: Make sure Google can reach it
Check the page in Google Search Console with the URL inspection tool. Confirm it is indexed, not blocked by robots.txt and not marked noindex. Link to it from related pages on your site so it is easy to discover.
Step 7: Earn mentions elsewhere
Google pays attention to how others see you. Reviews, mentions in industry publications, listings in trusted directories and partner pages all add weight. Focus on genuine mentions, not bought links.
Step 8: Track and refine
Recheck your question list every few weeks. If you are still not cited, compare your page again with the winners. Is your answer clearer? More specific? More current? Update and test again. If you already rank well and still miss out, our list of common AI Overview mistakes may help.
Picking your first five pages
Do not try to fix your whole site at once. Choose five questions where an AI Overview already appears, where you have real expertise, and where the question is close to a buying decision. “How much does a home EV charger installation cost” is a better first target for an electrician than a general history of electric cars. Finish all eight steps for those five pages, then use what you learn to plan the next batch.
