Boosting Visibility in Google AI Overviews: 7 Mistakes to Fix
If your pages rank in Google but rarely appear in AI Overviews, one of these common mistakes is often the cause. Here is how to spot and fix each one.

Google AI Overviews draw on pages that Google can crawl, index and trust for the question being asked. If your site ranks but is rarely cited, the problem is usually not a secret factor. It is often a fixable mistake: the answer is hidden, the facts are vague, or the page is hard to read. Below are seven common ones.
1. The answer is buried
Many pages open with a long story before getting to the point. AI Overviews tend to quote clear, short statements. If someone searches “how long does a boiler service take”, your page should say “about 45 to 60 minutes for a standard gas boiler” near the top, then explain the details.
2. One page tries to answer everything
A single “Services” page covering ten topics gives Google little reason to pick it for any one question. Split big topics into focused pages, each with one clear purpose. A plumber might have separate pages for boiler repair, leak detection and emergency call-outs.
3. Facts disagree across the web
If your website says you open at 8am, your Google Business Profile says 9am and a directory says 7:30, you look unreliable. Pick one source of truth and update every profile. Our page on correcting wrong AI information walks through this.
4. Thin content with no first-hand detail
Generic text that could be on any site gives AI nothing new to cite. Add what only you know: real price ranges, typical timelines, what customers usually ask, mistakes you see often. Specific detail is what makes a page worth quoting.
5. Blocking or slowing down Googlebot
Check your robots.txt, noindex tags and canonical tags. A page that is blocked or set to noindex cannot appear in an AI Overview. Also make sure key text is in the HTML and not only loaded later by scripts or hidden inside images.
6. Ignoring follow-up questions
AI Overviews often cover the next question too. Someone asking “is laser eye surgery painful” may also wonder about recovery time and cost. Add short sections that answer the natural follow-ups so your page covers the whole topic.
7. No signs of who is behind the content
Pages with no author, no company details and no date look less trustworthy. Add a short author line, an “about us” page, contact details and a “last updated” date. For health, finance and legal topics this matters even more.
How to check your progress
Pick 10 to 20 searches your buyers really make. Search each one and note whether an AI Overview appears, which sites it cites and whether you are among them. Repeat this every few weeks after your changes. Results move slowly and vary by search, so look for trends rather than single days. For a step-by-step approach to new content, see how to get featured in AI Overviews.
Keep in mind that no one controls which sources Google picks. Fixing these mistakes improves your chances. It does not lock in a citation.
A quick self-check before you change anything
Open one of your best-ranking pages and read only the first paragraph. Could a stranger answer the searcher’s question from it alone? Now check whether the page’s title, first heading and opening sentence all describe the same topic. Finally, compare your opening with the source Google currently cites for that search. If theirs is shorter, more specific or more recent, that is your first fix. This takes ten minutes per page and usually shows which of the seven mistakes above applies to you.
