Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) was an experiment, launched through Search Labs in 2023, that added AI-generated summaries to search results. In 2024 Google rolled the idea out more widely under the name AI Overviews. If you read advice about “optimizing for SGE”, it now applies to AI Overviews, and Google has also introduced an AI Mode for longer, conversational searches.

A Short Timeline

  • 2023: SGE opens as an opt-in experiment in Search Labs, first in the US.
  • 2024: Google launches AI Overviews in regular Google Search, starting in the US and then expanding to more countries and languages.
  • Since then: AI Overviews appear for many informational queries, and Google has added AI Mode as a separate, chat-like search experience.

Availability still varies by country, language and account, so what you see may differ from what a customer sees elsewhere.

What Stayed the Same

  • Summaries are generated from pages in Google’s index, with links to sources.
  • Standard search results still appear below.
  • Google has said there is no special markup required to appear; normal SEO best practices apply.
  • You cannot pay to be included in an AI Overview’s answer.

What Changed for Businesses

Reach

SGE was something only opted-in users saw. AI Overviews show up for a broad audience. That made them a real factor in how people discover businesses, rather than a curiosity.

Clicks

When a summary answers a simple question directly, some people do not click through. For informational content, this can mean fewer visits even if your page is used as a source. For decisions that need more detail, links in the overview can still bring motivated visitors.

Measurement

Google Search Console reports AI Overview traffic as part of normal web search data, not as a separate line. You need to combine Search Console trends with manual checks of important queries.

Local results

For local questions, such as “plumber open now near me”, Google often still shows maps results alongside or instead of an overview. That keeps Google Business Profile accuracy just as important as before. A complete profile with current hours, services and photos remains one of the most practical steps for local businesses.

What to Do Now

  1. Identify queries that trigger AI Overviews in your field by searching your key questions.
  2. Check which sources are linked and compare their pages with yours.
  3. Put clear answers near the top of relevant pages, under question-style headings.
  4. Strengthen trust signals: named authors, company details, up-to-date facts.
  5. Make sure Googlebot can access the page. Google uses its normal crawler for search features; the separate Google-Extended setting controls use for some AI model training, not inclusion in Search.
  6. Focus on questions where a click is still valuable, such as comparisons, local services and complex decisions.
