How to Find and Get Into the Sources ChatGPT Uses in Your Industry
Every industry has its own sources that ChatGPT leans on. This guide shows how to map them for your market and earn a place in them.

The short answer
ChatGPT’s answers lean on certain types of sources, and they differ by industry. The practical approach is to map which websites are cited for your customers’ questions, then work to be included in them through listings, reviews, expert contributions and press. Being present where ChatGPT already looks is often faster than building authority from scratch.
Step 1: Collect the sources
Take 20 questions your buyers ask and run them in ChatGPT with search on, and in Perplexity, which always shows its sources. Copy every cited URL into a spreadsheet with the question it appeared for. Repeat on another day, as sources can vary. Over two rounds you will see the same domains again and again.
Step 2: Sort sources by type
- Review and comparison platforms: G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, TripAdvisor.
- Directories and marketplaces: industry directories, booking sites, app stores.
- Publications: trade magazines, news sites, niche blogs.
- Community content: forums, Q&A sites, discussion threads.
- Reference sites: Wikipedia, government or official bodies, standards organisations.
- Competitor and vendor sites: other companies’ own pages.
What this looks like in different industries
B2B software. A question like “best CRM for a 10-person agency” tends to pull from software review platforms, vendor comparison pages and “best of” articles from tech publications. Priority: complete review platform profiles, ask customers for reviews, publish honest comparison pages.
Local services. “Emergency plumber in Antwerp” often draws on maps listings, local directories and review sites. Priority: accurate listings and steady reviews.
Travel and hospitality. “Quiet boutique hotel in Porto” leans on travel guides, booking platforms and travel blogs. Priority: guide features, booking profile quality and reviews.
Professional services. “Employment lawyer for startups in Paris” can surface law firm rankings, bar directories and articles quoting experts. Priority: directory accuracy and expert commentary in the press.
Step 3: Find your realistic way in
- Directories and review platforms: create or claim your profile and fill every field.
- Publications: pitch a useful angle, offer expert comment, or write a guest article.
- “Best of” lists: contact the author with clear, factual information about you. Don’t pay for placement on low-quality list sites.
- Communities: join as yourself and help. Never post fake recommendations.
- Reference sites: only where you meet their notability rules; don’t write promotional entries.
Step 4: Strengthen your own site as a source
Sometimes the cited source is a competitor’s guide. That is a sign the question has no good neutral answer yet. Write a better, more specific page on your site. See ChatGPT source optimization for how to make pages citable.
Prioritise by effort and impact
Not every source is worth the same effort. Score each domain on two things: how often it is cited for your questions, and how hard it is to get included. Start with sources that are cited often and easy to join, such as a directory where you only need to complete a profile. Leave hard targets like major publications for steady, longer-term outreach.
Step 5: Re-map every quarter
Sources shift as new articles appear and old ones age. Repeat the mapping each quarter and update your priorities. More on this in how AI models use external sources.
