AI assistants use external sources in two ways: indirectly, through the text they learned during training, and directly, by searching the web while answering. Citations usually appear only in the second case, when the assistant retrieves live pages and links to them. To be cited, your page must be found by that search and contain a clear, quotable answer.
Answers From Memory vs Answers From Search
When an assistant answers purely from training, it writes from patterns it learned. There is no specific page behind each sentence, so it usually cannot give a link. When it searches, it reads specific pages and can point to them. Perplexity shows sources on almost every answer. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot show links when they use web search. Google AI Overviews show source links inside Google Search.
This matters for your strategy. Being in training data helps over the long term. Being a good live source can help right away.
How Sources Get Picked
The exact methods are not public and vary between products, but the general steps are similar:
- The assistant turns the question into search queries.
- A search engine returns candidate pages.
- The assistant reads them and selects passages that answer the question.
- It writes an answer and attaches links to the passages it relied on.
So you need to pass two filters: rank well enough to be found, and be clear enough to be chosen.
What Cited Pages Have in Common
- They answer one question well. A page titled “How long does a kitchen renovation take in France?” with a clear timeline is easier to cite than a general services page.
- They state facts plainly. “Most full kitchen renovations take 4 to 8 weeks, depending on permits and custom units” can be lifted directly.
- They show who wrote them. An author name, company details and an updated date make a page look accountable.
- They are original. Your own data, pricing tables, process explanations and expert views give the assistant something it cannot find everywhere. See getting unique content cited by AI.
Being Cited by Others Counts Too
You do not have to be the cited page to benefit. If a trade magazine article that names your firm is cited, you still appear in the answer. That is why press coverage, guest articles and directory profiles matter. They become sources that carry your name.
Check Your Own Citations
Run your buyer questions in assistants that show sources. For each answer, note:
- Which domains are cited.
- Whether any cited page mentions you.
- What the cited pages do that yours do not.
This shows you exactly which sources hold influence in your market.
Common Problems
Pages blocked by robots.txt, content loaded only through scripts, paywalls and very slow pages can all stop an assistant from reading you. Check these first. Also watch for outdated third-party pages that get cited with wrong facts about you; contact the site owner to request a correction.
