ChatGPT Source Optimization: How to Make Your Pages Citable
When ChatGPT searches the web, it shows the pages it used as sources. This guide covers how to make your pages the kind it can find, read and cite.

The short answer
ChatGPT cites a page when it searches the web and that page gives a clear, trustworthy answer to the question. To become a source, your page must be reachable by crawlers, indexed by search, written so a passage answers the question directly, and backed by specific facts. Pages that bury the answer under marketing copy are rarely chosen.
How sourcing works in ChatGPT search
When ChatGPT decides a question needs current information, it runs a web search, reads a handful of results and writes an answer, usually with links to the pages it drew from. You can’t see the exact selection logic, but the general pattern is clear: it favours pages that match the question closely, are easy to read and look reliable. That is why source optimization focuses on the page itself.
1. Check technical access first
- robots.txt. Make sure you are not blocking the crawlers used for search. OpenAI documents its user agents, including one used for search results, separately from the one used for model training. You can allow the search crawler even if you choose to block training. See our AI crawler user agent list.
- Indexing. If a page isn’t indexed in major search engines, it is unlikely to be found. Check Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Readable HTML. Key text should be in the page source, not loaded only by scripts or shown only inside images or PDFs.
- Speed and stability. Slow or error-prone pages may simply be skipped.
2. Write passages that can be lifted
A cited page usually contains a short passage that answers the question on its own. Practical rules:
- Put the answer in the first two sentences under each heading.
- Use the question as the heading, for example “How long does a kitchen renovation take in Ghent?”.
- Include numbers, ranges and conditions: “Most projects take 4 to 8 weeks, depending on permits.”
- Define terms the first time you use them.
3. Make facts specific and checkable
Vague claims like “industry-leading” give nothing to cite. Specific, verifiable details do: prices or price ranges, service areas, opening hours, technical specs, certifications you really hold, and the date the page was last updated. If you quote a figure, link to where it comes from.
4. Build pages around one question each
A page that tries to answer twenty topics is weaker than several focused pages. A garden centre might create separate pages for “when to plant tulip bulbs in Belgium”, “best hedge plants for clay soil” and “delivery area and costs”. Each is a clean match for a specific prompt.
5. Keep pages fresh
For topics where things change, such as prices, regulations or product lineups, outdated pages lose out. Review your most important pages each quarter, update facts and show the update date.
6. Support your pages from outside
Search results that ChatGPT reads are shaped by authority signals like links and mentions. A page referenced by a trade association or a respected blog has a better chance of being found. Earn this through useful content and genuine relationships, not bought links.
How to test your progress
Ask ChatGPT, with search on, the questions your pages answer. Look at the sources it lists. Are they yours, a competitor’s, or a directory? Note which formats win and adapt. Our guide to monitoring AI citations explains how to do this systematically.
