Technical Checklist: Make Your Content Easy for AI to Collect
A setup checklist covering crawler access, sitemaps, rendering, feeds and page speed, so AI systems can actually read the content you publish.

Before AI systems can use your content, they have to fetch and read it. Many sites publish good content that crawlers struggle to collect because of blocked bots, pages that only render with JavaScript, missing sitemaps or duplicate URLs. This checklist covers the technical basics that let AI crawlers and AI-powered search engines take in your pages reliably.
1. Crawler Access
- Open
yoursite.com/robots.txtand check that you are not blocking the crawlers you want, including search engine bots and AI search crawlers. - Check your firewall or CDN bot settings. Some security tools block unknown bots by default, which can include AI crawlers.
- Make sure public pages do not require a login, cookie consent click or region check to show their text.

2. Sitemaps
- Publish an XML sitemap listing every page you want found.
- Include accurate last-modified dates so crawlers know what changed.
- Reference the sitemap in robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing matters here because Copilot relies on Bing’s index.
3. Rendering
Some crawlers do not run JavaScript, or run it only partly. If your main text appears only after scripts load, those crawlers may see an empty page. Test by viewing the page source (not the inspector). If your key text is missing, ask your developer about server-side rendering or pre-rendering for important pages.
4. One URL per Page
- Use canonical tags so that variants like
?ref=links point to one main URL. - Redirect old URLs to their new versions instead of leaving duplicates.
- Avoid publishing the same article in several places on your own site.
5. Feeds and Update Signals
An RSS or Atom feed for your blog or news section helps systems notice new content. Some search engines also support IndexNow, a protocol that pings them when a page changes; Bing is one of them. These do not force anything to be used, but they shorten the time before changes are seen.
6. Speed and Reliability
Crawlers have limited time per site. Slow servers, frequent timeouts and very heavy pages mean fewer pages fetched. Basic hosting quality, image compression and caching all help.
7. Clean, Readable HTML
- Use real headings and paragraphs, not text inside images.
- Add descriptive alt text to images that carry information.
- Add structured data for your organization, products or services.
See technical SEO for AI crawlers for more detail on each point.
8. Check Your Server Logs
Your hosting logs show which bots visit and which pages they request. If a crawler you care about never appears, or gets error codes, that is your first fix. Many hosts offer simple log viewers; your developer can filter by user agent.
What Ingestion Does Not Mean
Being collected is a requirement, not a result. A crawler reading your page does not mean an assistant will mention you. Whether it does depends on how relevant, clear and well supported your content is compared with other sources. For that side, read content distribution for LLM ingestion.
