How AI Crawlers Find Your Content: A Technical Setup Guide

If AI crawlers cannot reach or read your pages, your content cannot shape AI answers. Here is the technical setup that lets AI systems access your site.

For AI systems to use your content, their crawlers must be allowed in robots.txt, able to load your pages quickly, and able to read the main text without running JavaScript. A clean sitemap, stable URLs and accessible HTML make it easier for both AI training crawlers and live AI search tools to pick up your pages.

Know the two kinds of AI access

Some crawlers collect public web content that AI companies may use to train models. Others fetch pages in real time when a user asks a question, so the assistant can answer with current information and sometimes show links. Perplexity, for example, shows source links in its answers, and ChatGPT can browse the web. Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing, and Google’s AI features draw on Google Search. Blocking one type does not always block the other, so decide what you want for each.

Step 1: Review robots.txt

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check for rules that block AI user agents. AI companies publish the names of their crawlers in their own documentation, such as OpenAI’s GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended (a control token for some Google AI uses). Names and rules change, so check each company’s current documentation rather than copying an old list. A simple rule that allows a crawler looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

Also check your CDN or security plugin. Some bot-protection settings block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.

Step 2: Make text available without JavaScript

Many crawlers read the raw HTML and do not run scripts. If your product descriptions or prices only appear after JavaScript loads, they may be invisible. Test by viewing the page source (not the inspector) and searching for a sentence from your main content. If it is missing, ask your developer about server-side rendering or pre-rendering.

Step 3: Keep a clean sitemap

  • List only live, indexable pages.
  • Include accurate last-modified dates so updates are noticed.
  • Reference the sitemap in robots.txt.
  • Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, since several AI tools rely on these search indexes.

Step 4: Check speed and errors

Slow pages and server errors waste crawler time. Fix 404 errors on important URLs, avoid long redirect chains and make sure key pages load quickly on a basic connection. Live AI search tools often fetch pages while the user waits, so a page that times out may simply be skipped in favour of a faster source.

Step 5: Look at your server logs

Your hosting provider can usually give you access logs. Search them for AI user agent names to see which crawlers visit, which pages they request and whether they get errors. This is the only direct proof that a crawler reached your content.

What technical access does not do

Being crawlable is a requirement, not a guarantee. AI assistants still decide which sources to use based on relevance and trust. Once access is fixed, focus on content and outside mentions. The guide on where to publish content so AI assistants find it covers the next step, and structuring content for retrieval systems explains how to make each page easier to use.
