AI-Friendly Writing Style Guide: 12 Rules With Examples
A practical style guide for writing pages that people enjoy reading and AI assistants can easily understand and quote, with before-and-after examples.

AI-friendly writing is simply clear writing with the facts up front. Lead with the answer, use one idea per sentence, name things precisely, and keep your details consistent across pages. These habits help human readers too, which is the point: AI assistants aim to give people useful answers, so they favour content that is easy to understand and verify.
Rules for structure
1. Put the answer first
Before: “Choosing a mattress is a personal journey with many factors to weigh…”
After: “Side sleepers usually do best on a medium-soft mattress, because it lets the shoulder and hip sink in.”
2. Make headings into questions or clear labels
Before: “Our Philosophy”
After: “How long does delivery take?”
3. Keep paragraphs short
Two to four sentences. One main idea. If a paragraph needs a “however” halfway through, split it.
4. Use lists for steps and options
Sequences belong in numbered lists. Choices and factors belong in bullets. This makes each point easy to lift out.
Rules for wording
5. Name things exactly
Before: “Our flagship solution helps teams work better.”
After: “TeamDesk is a shared inbox for customer support teams of 5 to 50 people.”
6. Prefer facts to adjectives
Before: “Lightning-fast delivery.”
After: “Orders placed before 2 pm ship the same day within France.”
7. Say who it is for, and who it is not for
“Best for small bakeries; not suitable for industrial production lines.” Honest limits make recommendations more precise, and assistants often answer “best for…” questions.
8. Define terms the first time
If you use “AEO”, write “answer engine optimization (AEO)” first. Do not assume the reader or the AI knows your shorthand.
Rules for consistency and trust
9. Use the same facts everywhere
Prices, opening hours, product names and service areas must match across your site, listings and social profiles. Conflicting facts make any of them less likely to be repeated.
10. Date what changes
Show when a page was last updated, and update it for real. “Prices valid for 2026” is more useful than an undated table.
11. Cite sources for claims
If you state a regulation, standard or technical fact, link to where it comes from. Do not invent statistics. A wrong number can be repeated widely and damage your credibility.
12. Write like a helpful expert, not an advert
Before: “The best accountant in Brussels, guaranteed!”
After: “We handle VAT returns and annual accounts for freelancers and small companies in Brussels, in French, Dutch and English.”
What to avoid
- Keyword stuffing. Repeating a phrase ten times does not help AI tools and annoys readers.
- Hidden text or text only inside images.
- Walls of AI-generated filler with no specific facts.
- Copying competitor pages. Original detail is what makes content worth citing.
Using this guide with a team
Share the twelve rules with anyone who writes for your site, including freelancers. Ask them to check every draft against rules 1, 6 and 9 before handing it in. Those three catch most problems. For layout details beyond wording, see our LLM content formatting guidelines, and to see the rules applied to page structure, read the AI SERP optimization guide.
