Perplexity
Format content for large language models the same way you would for a busy reader: put the answer first, use one idea per paragraph, write descriptive headings, and use lists and tables for steps and comparisons. LLMs and the search systems around them often split pages into chunks, so each section should make sense on its own.
Lead With the Answer
Open every page and every major section with a direct statement. Compare these two openings for a page about delivery times:
- Weak: “At our company, we understand how important timely delivery is to our valued customers.”
- Strong: “Orders placed before 2pm ship the same day. Delivery in France takes 1 to 3 working days.”
The second one can be quoted as-is. The first says nothing a model can use.
Write Headings That Name the Topic
Headings act like labels for each chunk. “Overview” or “More info” tells a model nothing. Use headings such as “Return Policy for Opened Items” or “Pricing for Teams of 10 or More”. Keep a logical order: one <h1>, then <h2> sections, then <h3> sub-points.
Make Each Section Self-Contained
If a section only makes sense after reading the one before, it loses meaning when pulled out alone. Practical rules:
- Repeat the subject instead of writing “it” or “this” at the start of a section.
- Name your brand and product in full where it matters.
- Keep sections between roughly 80 and 250 words.
Our guide on content for RAG systems explains why this matters for retrieval.
Use Lists, Steps and Tables
Numbered lists for processes
Anything with an order (setup, booking, returns) should be a numbered list with one action per step.
Bullet lists for features and conditions
Short bullets with a bold label at the start are easy to scan and easy to quote.
Tables for comparisons
Plan comparisons, size charts and opening hours are clearer in a real HTML table than in an image or a paragraph.
Be Precise With Facts
- Use numbers, units and currencies: “€29 per month”, not “affordable”.
- Write dates in full and say when something was last updated.
- State limits and exceptions clearly. Models often repeat a claim without its condition if the condition is buried.
- Define terms the first time you use them. A short glossary page helps for specialist vocabulary.
Keep the Code Simple
Text inside images, PDFs, carousels, tabs that load later, or heavy JavaScript can be missed by crawlers. Put key text in plain HTML that appears in the page source. Avoid hiding important answers inside accordions that only load on click.
Formatting Checklist
- Does the first paragraph answer the page’s main question?
- Does every heading describe its section?
- Could each section be read alone and still make sense?
- Are steps numbered and comparisons in tables?
- Are all facts specific, current and consistent with your other pages?
- Is the text visible in the raw HTML?
Before and After: A Service Page
Before: a heading “Our Services”, followed by three long paragraphs about passion and quality. After: a heading “Commercial Cleaning for Offices in Lyon”, a two-sentence summary of what is included and the price range, a bullet list of tasks, a table of visit frequencies, and a short section titled “What Is Not Included”. The second version gives an AI assistant clear facts to quote and clear limits, which reduces the risk of it overstating what you offer.
