To optimize a page for AI summaries on search results pages, answer the main question in the first two sentences, use headings that match real questions, add short lists or steps, and include specific, up-to-date facts. AI Overviews and Copilot answers tend to draw on pages that are easy to extract from and that already perform well in search.

Pick the right pages to optimize

Not every page needs this work. Focus on pages that:

  • Target questions where an AI summary already appears in Google or Bing
  • Rank on the first page or close to it in classic results
  • Answer something buyers ask before choosing, such as costs, comparisons or how-tos

A plumbing company might pick “how much does it cost to replace a water heater” rather than its general homepage.

Write an answer block at the top

Under the main heading, write two or three sentences that fully answer the question. Avoid warm-up lines like “In today’s world”. A good answer block for the water heater page might state a typical price range, the main factors that change it, and how long the job takes. The rest of the page then supports and expands that answer.

Use question-shaped headings

Turn sections into the follow-up questions people actually ask:

  • “What affects the price?”
  • “Gas or electric: which is cheaper to run?”
  • “How long does installation take?”

Answer each one in its first sentence. This makes it easy for AI systems to match a section to a sub-question.

Prefer lists and steps for process and options

When content is a sequence, use a numbered list. When it is a set of options or factors, use bullets. Keep each item short and complete. Avoid long paragraphs that hide the key point in the middle.

Be specific and current

  • Use numbers where honest: ranges, dimensions, durations.
  • Name the products, materials or methods you mean.
  • Show a visible “last updated” date and actually keep it updated.
  • Remove outdated advice rather than leaving it below new advice.

Support with structured data

Add FAQ, HowTo, Product or LocalBusiness markup where it truthfully matches the content. Markup helps machines read your page but does not guarantee use in an AI summary. See FAQ schema implementation.

Strengthen the page’s authority

Pages used in AI summaries often have signs of trust: a named author or business, clear contact details, links to sources, and links from other relevant sites. Link to the page from related pages on your own site so search engines see it as important.

Check the result

After updating, search the query in Google and Bing every week or two. Note whether an AI summary appears and which sources it cites. Remember that summaries vary by user, location and time, and neither Google nor Microsoft promises any page a place. For broader context, read the AI search optimization guide.

Before and after example

Before: a page titled “Our Water Heater Services” opens with the company history, mentions prices only in a contact form, and buries installation time in the last paragraph. After: the page is titled with the buyer’s question, opens with a price range and the factors behind it, uses three short question headings, and lists installation steps. Nothing about the service changed, only how easily its facts can be found and quoted.

Quick page checklist

  1. Direct answer in the first two sentences
  2. Question-shaped headings
  3. Lists for steps and options
  4. Specific, dated facts
  5. Matching structured data
  6. Internal links to and from related pages
