FAQ schema is JSON-LD code that labels questions and answers on a page so machines can read them without guessing. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative sites, but the markup is still a clean way to describe your Q&A content to search engines and AI systems. It works best when the same questions and answers are clearly visible on the page.
When FAQ schema makes sense
Use it on pages where you genuinely list questions with one answer each, written by you. Good examples: a pricing page with “Is there a setup fee?”, a service page with “Do you work weekends?”, or a product page with “Is it dishwasher safe?”. Do not use it for forum threads with many user answers, or to stuff keywords into hidden questions.
The basic JSON-LD structure
Place one script block in the page head or body. The core pattern looks like this:
{"@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "FAQPage", "mainEntity": [{"@type": "Question", "name": "Do you offer same-day delivery?", "acceptedAnswer": {"@type": "Answer", "text": "Yes, for orders placed before 2pm in the city centre."}}]}
Wrap it in a script tag with the type application/ld+json. Add one Question object per visible question.
Implementation rules that matter
- Match the visible text. The question and answer in the markup should be the same as what users see. Mismatches can cause the markup to be ignored.
- One FAQPage per page. Combine all questions into one mainEntity list rather than several FAQPage blocks.
- Keep answers complete. Each answer should make sense on its own, since it may be read out of context.
- Use plain text or simple HTML in answers. Links and basic formatting are fine; avoid scripts or heavy markup.
- Do not repeat the same FAQ across many pages. Write questions specific to each page.
Adding it in common platforms
On WordPress, SEO plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math offer FAQ blocks that output the schema for you. On Shopify and Webflow, you can add JSON-LD in a custom code section or theme file. On a custom site, generate the JSON-LD from the same data that renders the visible FAQ, so the two never drift apart.
Testing and maintenance
- Paste the URL into the Schema.org validator to check the syntax.
- Use Google’s Rich Results Test to confirm Google can read it.
- Check the Enhancements area of Google Search Console for errors over time.
- When you change an answer on the page, update the markup at the same time.
What FAQ schema does for AI visibility
Be realistic. Schema does not make ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity mention you. What helps is the content itself: clear, honest answers to real buyer questions. The markup makes that content easier to parse and less likely to be misread. For guidance on writing the answers, see optimizing FAQs for AI answer boxes, and for the voice-search side, FAQ schema for voice and AI.
A common mistake: FAQ blocks in page builders
Some page builders add FAQ markup automatically to every accordion or toggle element, even when the content is not really a question and answer. That can produce markup for things like “Our Story” or “Opening Hours” labelled as questions. After adding any FAQ block, view the page source or run the Rich Results Test and confirm the questions listed are the ones you meant. If an SEO plugin and your theme both add FAQ markup, turn one off.
