FAQs work well for AI answers when they use the real wording of customer questions and give short, direct, specific answers. An assistant looking for “Do you ship to Switzerland?” can lift a clear two-sentence reply far more easily than a long sales paragraph. Collect real questions, answer them honestly, keep each answer focused, and mark up the section with FAQ structured data.

Where to Find the Right Questions

Do not guess. The best FAQ questions come from people who already ask them:

  • Support emails and live chat transcripts
  • Questions sales staff hear on every call
  • “People also ask” boxes in Google for your main topics
  • Reviews, where customers mention doubts they had before buying
  • Your own tests in AI assistants, asking “What should I know before buying [your product type]?”

Keep the customer’s wording. If they ask “Can I cancel anytime?”, do not rewrite it as “What is our flexible subscription policy?”

The Two-Sentence Answer Rule

Start every answer with a sentence that fully answers the question. Add a second sentence with the key condition or detail. Then, if needed, a short extra paragraph or a link. For example:

Q: Do you install heat pumps in older houses?

Yes, we install air-source heat pumps in most houses built before 1950. We first do a free survey to check insulation and radiator sizes, since older homes sometimes need upgrades first.

That answer is useful even if an assistant quotes only the first sentence.

What to Avoid

  • Marketing questions nobody asks, like “Why are we the best?”
  • Answers that dodge, such as “Contact us for pricing” when you could give a range
  • Dozens of near-duplicate questions made only to target keywords
  • Answers that conflict with other pages on your site

Where to Put FAQs

A single giant FAQ page is fine as a hub, but the strongest approach puts a few relevant questions on each product or service page. A plumber’s “boiler repair” page should answer boiler questions; the “drain unblocking” page answers drain questions. This places each answer next to the context that supports it. It also keeps each page useful on its own, so a visitor who lands from an AI citation finds the answer and the next step together, without hunting through a long general list.

Add FAQ Structured Data

Wrap your questions and answers in FAQPage schema using JSON-LD. The marked-up text must match the visible text on the page. Search engines have changed how often they show FAQ results in classic listings, but the markup still describes the content clearly for machines. Our guide to FAQ schema for voice and AI has an example.

Keep Them Current

Review FAQs every quarter. Prices, delivery areas and policies change, and an outdated answer can be repeated by AI for a long time. If that has already happened, see what to do when ChatGPT shows wrong pricing.

Quick Template

  1. Question in the customer’s own words
  2. First sentence: the direct answer
  3. Second sentence: the main condition or detail
  4. Optional: a link to the full page
