FAQ schema is structured data, using the Schema.org FAQPage type, that marks up questions and answers on a page so machines can read them easily. It can help search engines and AI systems understand your Q&A content, but it is not a shortcut to being read aloud by voice assistants or cited by AI. The real value lies in the questions you choose and how clearly you answer them.
A Realistic View First
Google restricted FAQ rich results in 2023, and they now appear mainly for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. So for most businesses, FAQ markup no longer produces the expandable questions in Google results it once did. It can still describe your content clearly to any system that reads structured data, and the visible FAQ content remains useful for people and AI tools alike. Treat the markup as a helpful extra, not the main event.
When an FAQ Section Makes Sense
- On service and product pages, for the questions buyers ask before deciding.
- On pricing pages, for billing, contract and refund questions.
- On a support page, for common how-to questions.
Avoid a single giant FAQ page that tries to answer everything. Questions work best near the content they relate to.
Write Answers for Voice and AI
- Use the customer’s wording for the question: “Can I cancel my subscription anytime?”
- Answer in the first sentence: “Yes, you can cancel anytime from your account settings, and you will not be charged again.”
- Add one or two lines of detail only if needed.
- Keep it self-contained: do not rely on “as mentioned above”.
- Be specific: real numbers, real time frames, real conditions.
Short, self-contained answers are easier for a voice assistant to read out and for an AI tool to quote. See also voice search and AI optimization.
How to Add the Markup
Each question becomes a Question item with a name (the question) and an acceptedAnswer containing an Answer with text. Most website builders and SEO plugins can generate it from an FAQ block. Rules to follow:
- The marked-up questions and answers must be visible on the page.
- Use it only for questions you answer yourself, not for user-submitted Q&A forums (that uses a different type).
- Do not use it for advertising slogans disguised as questions.
- Validate it with the Schema.org validator or Google’s Rich Results Test.
Choose Questions That Matter
The best questions come from real conversations: support tickets, sales calls, chat logs and reviews. Prioritise questions about cost, timing, eligibility, compatibility and risk. Those are the details buyers ask AI assistants about before choosing a provider.
Combine With Other Structured Data
FAQ markup works best as part of a clear structure: Organization data for your company facts, Product or Service data where relevant, and well-organised headings. Our guide to JSON-LD for company information explains the foundation.
Common Mistakes
- Marking up the same FAQs on every page of the site.
- Answers that contradict your pricing or policy pages.
- Keyword-stuffed questions nobody would really ask.
- Forgetting to update answers when policies change.
