How Toronto Businesses Can Check What AI Says About Them
Before investing in AI visibility, Toronto businesses should know where they stand. This guide shows how to audit your presence in AI answers step by step.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
A Toronto business can check its AI visibility by asking the main assistants the questions its customers ask, recording who gets recommended and which sources are cited, and then checking whether the facts about the business are correct. This audit takes a few hours and shows exactly where the gaps are before you spend money on anything.
Step 1: Build a Toronto Prompt List
Write 15 to 25 questions in your customers’ own words. Mix service, location and situation:
- “Best Korean restaurant in North York for a family dinner”
- “Real estate lawyer in Toronto for a first condo purchase”
- “Daycare near Leslieville with spots for toddlers”
- “Bike repair shop on the Danforth open on Sunday”
- “IT support company in Mississauga for a 20-person office”
Include prompts for the wider GTA, such as Markham, Brampton, Vaughan or Scarborough, if you serve them. If you serve French-speaking customers, add a few prompts in French.
Step 2: Ask Several Assistants
Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Also note whether a Google AI Overview appears for the same question in Google Search. Use a fresh chat for each prompt so earlier questions do not influence the answer.
Step 3: Record Four Things
- Mentioned or not: does your business appear?
- Position and tone: are you listed first, last, or with a caveat?
- Competitors: who appears instead of or alongside you?
- Sources: which websites are linked or referenced?
A simple spreadsheet is enough. Our guide to monitoring AI citations suggests a format.
Step 4: Check Facts About You
Ask direct questions such as “What does [your business] do?” or “Where is [your business] located?”. Look for wrong addresses, closed locations, outdated services or a mix-up with a similarly named company. Wrong facts usually come from outdated listings or old pages somewhere online.
Step 5: Look at the Cited Sources
The sources AI cites show where you need to be. In Toronto these often include Google reviews, Yelp, local media and blogs, neighbourhood guides, professional directories and industry associations. If a competitor appears because of a review site or a local “best of” article, that tells you which kind of proof is missing for you.
Step 6: Turn Findings Into a Short Fix List
- Fix wrong facts at the source first.
- Create pages for services or areas where you are missing.
- Collect honest reviews on the platforms AI cited.
- Repeat the audit monthly to see trends.
Once your audit is done, our guide to getting Canadian businesses recommended by AI covers the improvement side.
A Sample Finding and What It Means
Imagine a physiotherapy clinic in Etobicoke that appears for “physio near Etobicoke” but never for “physio for sports injuries in west Toronto”. The audit shows assistants citing a competitor’s detailed sports injury page and a local running club’s recommended list. The fix is clear: publish a strong page on sports injuries and build a genuine relationship with local sports groups. The audit turned a vague worry into two concrete tasks.
How Often to Repeat It
Run the full audit once a quarter and a shorter check of your top ten prompts every month. Keep the same wording each time so the results are comparable.
