Technical SEO for Generative Answers: A Developer's Checklist
Great content is useless to AI if machines cannot fetch and parse it. This technical checklist is for whoever runs your website.

Technical SEO for generative answers means making sure AI crawlers and search engines can reach, render and understand your pages without obstacles. The key checks are crawler access, server-side text, clean HTML structure, structured data, correct canonicals, fresh sitemaps and stable performance. Hand this checklist to your developer or web agency.
1. Access: Can the Bots Get In?
- robots.txt: review rules for search engine crawlers and AI crawlers. Decide deliberately which to allow. Blocking a crawler can reduce your chances of appearing in that company’s products.
- Firewall and CDN: some bot-protection services challenge or block AI crawlers by default. Check the settings and logs.
- Login walls: content behind a login or paywall is generally not available to be cited.
- Status codes: key pages should return 200, not soft 404s or redirect chains.
The AI crawler user agent list helps you identify bots in your logs.
2. Rendering: Is the Text in the HTML?
Some AI crawlers do not run JavaScript the way a browser does. If your page loads its main text with client-side scripts, a crawler may see an empty shell. Test by fetching a page with curl or viewing the raw source. If the key text is missing, use server-side rendering or pre-rendering for important pages.
3. Structure: Can Machines Follow the Page?
- One clear H1, then logical H2 and H3 headings.
- Real HTML lists and tables for lists and tables, not styled divs.
- Descriptive link text instead of “click here”.
- Important facts as text, not inside images, canvases or PDFs only.
- Alt text on meaningful images.
4. Structured Data
Add JSON-LD schema that matches visible content: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Offer, Service, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList. Validate it with a schema testing tool. Keep values like prices and addresses in sync with the page text. See schema markup for AI understanding.
5. Canonicals and Duplicates
Duplicate or near-duplicate pages split signals and can confuse which version is quoted. Set canonical tags correctly, consolidate thin variants, and avoid parameter URLs creating copies of the same content.
6. Sitemaps and Indexing
- Keep an XML sitemap with only indexable, canonical URLs.
- Include accurate last-modified dates.
- Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing matters because Copilot relies on it.
- Consider IndexNow support so supported search engines learn about updates faster.
7. Performance and Reliability
Slow or unstable pages may time out when a crawler or a live AI search fetches them. Aim for fast server response, compressed assets and good uptime. Monitor for crawl errors after deployments.
8. Optional: llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain text file at your site root that points AI tools to your most useful pages. Support among AI companies is limited and not guaranteed. It is cheap to add, but treat it as a nice extra, not a fix for weak content or blocked crawlers.
9. Logging and Monitoring
Check server logs regularly for AI crawler visits, response codes and the pages they request. If a crawler you care about never appears, or receives errors, investigate access rules. Pair log data with prompt tracking to see whether technical fixes change anything in answers.
Quick Priority Order
- Unblock wanted crawlers and fix errors on key pages.
- Make sure main text is in the server-rendered HTML.
- Submit sitemaps to Google and Bing.
- Add and validate schema.
- Clean up duplicates and speed.
