For AI search, a good page title and heading say exactly what the page answers, in the words a buyer would use. Assistants that browse the web scan titles and headings to decide whether a page fits a question. Clear, specific titles make it easier for them to pick, quote and cite your page.
Why Titles Matter More Than You Think
When ChatGPT searches the web, when Copilot pulls Bing results or when Perplexity gathers sources, they work through many pages quickly. The title tag, the H1 and the subheadings act like labels. A page titled “Solutions” says nothing. A page titled “Commercial Roof Repair in Lyon: Costs and Timelines” tells both people and machines what to expect.
Five Rules for AI-Friendly Titles
- Name the thing. Use the product, service or topic in plain words. “Payroll Software for Restaurants”, not “Smarter Teams Start Here”.
- Add the qualifier buyers use. Location, audience, size or price range: “for Freelancers”, “in Leeds”, “under €50”.
- Match the question type. If the page compares, say “vs”. If it explains cost, say “Cost” or “Pricing”. If it is a how-to, start with “How to”.
- One page, one focus. If your title needs two “and”s, you may need two pages.
- Keep the brand at the end. “… – YourBrand” keeps the topic first.
Before and After Examples
- Before: “Our Expertise”. After: “Employment Law Advice for Small Businesses in Dublin”.
- Before: “Pricing”. After: “Website Hosting Plans and Prices (Monthly and Yearly)”.
- Before: “Blog Post #42”. After: “How Long Does a Kitchen Renovation Take? A Week-by-Week Guide”.
Subheadings Are Mini-Titles
Assistants often quote a section rather than a whole page. Each H2 should make sense on its own. Instead of “Overview” and “Details”, use “What the Service Includes” and “How Much It Costs”. Question-style headings, such as “Do You Work With Listed Buildings?”, fit well with the way people talk to assistants.
Keep Title, H1 and Content Aligned
A title that promises “Prices” on a page with no prices damages trust. Make sure the first paragraph answers what the title promises, in two or three sentences. That opening is often the part assistants lift into an answer.
Find the Right Words
Do not guess the wording. Look at:
- Questions customers ask in emails and calls.
- Search Console queries for your existing pages.
- The phrasing assistants use when you ask them about your category.
Our guide to keyword research for AI queries explains how to collect these. Once the wording is set, use it consistently in your title, H1 and first sentence.
A Quick Title Test
Read your title to someone outside your company and ask what the page will tell them. If they cannot say, rewrite it. Then ask an assistant your buyer’s question and look at the titles of the pages it cites. They are usually direct and specific, which is a useful model to copy.
Common Mistakes
- Clever or vague titles that only make sense to insiders.
- Stuffing several keyword variants into one title.
- Duplicate titles across many pages, which makes them look interchangeable.
- Titles in images or scripts that crawlers cannot read.
