How Different AI Search Engines Read Your Structured Content
Google AI Overviews, Copilot, ChatGPT search and Perplexity each find content a little differently. Here is what that means for how you structure pages.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
AI search engines all need to find your page, read it and decide whether it answers the question. But they get there through different routes: Google AI Overviews use Google’s index, Copilot draws on Bing, ChatGPT can search the web and read pages, and Perplexity searches and shows its sources openly. Good structure helps with all of them, but a few details differ.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
These appear inside Google Search and are built on Google’s own index. If a page is not indexed in Google, it will not be used. Practical points:
- Use Google Search Console to confirm indexing.
- Schema markup that Google supports, such as Organization, Product and Article, helps it understand your pages.
- Your Google Business Profile matters for local questions.

Microsoft Copilot
Copilot uses Bing for web results. Many sites focus only on Google and forget Bing. Practical points:
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
- Consider IndexNow so Bing hears about updates quickly.
- Claim your Bing Places listing if you have a physical location.
ChatGPT with search
ChatGPT answers from what the model learned in training and, when it searches, from web pages it finds and reads. Practical points:
- Make sure your robots.txt and firewall do not block the crawlers you want to allow. OpenAI documents its crawler names publicly.
- Put the key answer and facts in plain HTML text, not inside images or behind logins.
- Be clearly described on other credible sites, since training data and search both draw on the wider web.

Perplexity
Perplexity searches the web for most questions and lists the sources it used, so you can see exactly who gets cited. Practical points:
- Check which sources appear for your target questions. They show what kind of page wins.
- Clear, specific, recently updated pages tend to be a good fit for this style of answer.
- Allow its crawler if you want to be considered.
Gemini and Claude
Gemini is closely tied to Google’s ecosystem. Claude can also search the web in many setups. For both, the same basics apply: be indexed, be clear, be consistent and be mentioned on trusted sites.
What stays the same everywhere
- Server-rendered text that loads without scripts.
- A direct answer near the top of each page.
- Clear headings and short sections.
- Consistent facts across your site and profiles.
- Genuine mentions on respected sites in your field.
None of these engines lets you pay for placement in the AI answer itself, and each one changes how it works over time. Focus on the shared basics, then check each engine for your own key questions.
A quick way to compare engines yourself
Choose five questions your buyers ask. Type each one into Google, Copilot, ChatGPT and Perplexity on the same day, and note three things: whether your brand appears, which competitors appear, and which sources are cited or linked. Patterns usually show up fast. For example, you may appear in Google AI Overviews but not in Copilot, which often points to a Bing indexing gap. Or Perplexity may keep citing one review site, which tells you where your profile needs work. Repeat the exercise every month.
