The Search Generative Experience (SGE) was Google’s experiment with AI-written answers at the top of search results, and it evolved into what Google now calls AI Overviews. If you see “GSE” or “SGE” in older guides, they refer to the same idea. SEO for it today means strong Google fundamentals plus content that answers questions clearly enough to be summarized and linked.

A Short History in Plain Words

Google tested SGE through its Search Labs programme, where users could opt in to see AI-generated summaries above the usual results. After the testing phase, Google rolled out AI Overviews in Google Search for many users and languages. The name changed; the core idea stayed: a short AI summary with links to sources, above or alongside traditional results. Google also offers AI Mode, a more conversational search experience.

How AI Overviews Choose Sources

Google has not published a formula, and no one outside Google knows it exactly. What is widely understood:

  • AI Overviews draw on pages in Google’s search index.
  • Google says its usual quality systems and guidance on helpful content still apply.
  • Linked sources are often pages that address the specific question directly, not always the top organic result.
  • There is no special tag or payment to be included.

What to Do: A Practical Checklist

  1. Get indexed. Use Google Search Console to check that key pages are indexed and free of errors.
  2. Answer early. Put the direct answer to the page’s question in the first few lines.
  3. Cover follow-ups. AI Overviews often handle multi-part questions. A page on “best time to visit Lisbon” should also cover weather, crowds and prices.
  4. Use structured data honestly. Product, LocalBusiness, Recipe, FAQ and other types help Google read your facts.
  5. Show experience. Include real examples, original photos and first-hand detail, in line with Google’s helpful content guidance.
  6. Keep local data complete. For local businesses, a full and accurate Google Business Profile supports local AI answers.

Measuring Your Presence

Search Console reports include traffic from search results pages that show AI features, but they do not split out AI Overview clicks in detail. To understand your visibility, many businesses check a list of target queries by hand or with tools, noting whether an AI Overview appears and which sources it links. Results vary by user, location and time, so track patterns.

Common Misunderstandings

  • “Old SGE tactics are obsolete.” Mostly not. Clear answers and solid SEO still apply.
  • “Only the number-one result gets cited.” Not necessarily. Pages lower down can be linked if they answer part of the question well.
  • “You can opt in to be featured.” There is no opt-in for publishers. You can, however, limit how snippets of your content are shown using Google’s documented controls.

Local and Product Queries

For local businesses, AI features in Google often combine web pages with business profile data, so hours, categories and reviews matter. For shops, clear product pages with prices, availability and specifications give Google’s AI concrete details to summarise. Keep both sets of data current.
