The best practices for Perplexity SEO come down to four areas: let crawlers in, write answer-first content with specific facts, build trust through consistent information and independent mentions, and measure results with a fixed set of prompts. Use the 20-point checklist below as a working document. Each item is something you can verify.

Access (5 points)

  1. robots.txt does not block PerplexityBot or major search engine crawlers you want to allow.
  2. Firewall or bot protection does not silently block those crawlers.
  3. Main text, headings and key facts appear in the page source without needing JavaScript.
  4. An up-to-date XML sitemap is published and listed in robots.txt.
  5. Important pages return a 200 status, with no long redirect chains.

Content (6 points)

  1. Each key page targets one clear question a buyer asks.
  2. The first two or three sentences answer that question directly.
  3. Pages include specific facts: prices or ranges, timeframes, locations, specs.
  4. Headings are written like questions or clear topics, not slogans.
  5. Comparison pages exist for the main alternatives buyers consider, and they are fair.
  6. Pages with changing facts show a “last updated” date and are reviewed regularly.

Trust (5 points)

  1. Business name, address, contact details and core facts match across your site, listings and profiles.
  2. Expert content shows a real author with relevant experience.
  3. Claims based on outside data link to the original source.
  4. At least a few independent, credible sites describe your business accurately.
  5. Reviews are genuine, recent and answered; none are bought or invented.

Measurement (4 points)

  1. A fixed list of 15 to 30 buyer prompts is defined and written down.
  2. Prompts are run on a regular schedule, and cited sources are recorded.
  3. Your citation and mention rates are compared with key competitors.
  4. Referral traffic from Perplexity is tracked in analytics.

How to use the checklist

Go through it with your web developer and whoever writes your content. Mark each item as done, partly done or missing. Then pick the three missing items most likely to matter for your business. For a local shop, that is often listing consistency and reviews. For a software company, it is often comparison pages and direct answers. For a publisher, it is often freshness and authorship.

What is not on the list, and why

  • Keyword density targets. Repeating words does not make a page more useful.
  • Paid “submission” to Perplexity. There is no paid route into its sources.
  • Mass-produced pages. Volume without quality adds noise.
  • Forum seeding. Posting about yourself under fake identities breaks community rules and erodes trust.

Review every quarter

Websites change. A redesign can break access, a price change can leave old pages wrong, and new competitors appear. Re-run the checklist every three months. To understand the thinking behind each item, read Perplexity AI SEO vs Google SEO.

Example: one item in practice

Take item 7, answering directly. A dog grooming salon in Bristol had a services page that began with the owner’s story. The new opening reads: “Full grooming for small dogs costs from £40 and takes about two hours; larger breeds start at £55.” The story moved further down. One sentence changed, and the page now answers the most common question right away. Work through the list item by item like this and small changes add up.

Keep a dated log of each change. When you later see a shift in citations, you will know which changes were live at the time.
