Perplexity Source Ranking Factors: 9 Signals to Work On
Perplexity does not publish a ranking formula, but some page and brand signals clearly help. Here are nine practical factors and how to improve each one.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
Perplexity has not published an exact list of ranking factors. Based on how its answers work and what is well known about search, pages are more likely to be cited when they closely match the question, contain specific facts, are current, are easy to read, come from a reputable site and can be accessed by crawlers. The nine signals below are practical areas you can improve.
Content signals
1. Close match to the question
A page about “how to winterise a sailboat in Brittany” fits that question far better than a general boating page. Create pages around specific questions your buyers ask.
2. Direct answers
Pages that answer in the first few lines are easier to use. Put the answer first and the background after.
3. Specific, checkable details
Numbers, dates, names, places and step-by-step instructions make a page useful to quote. Vague marketing language does not.
4. Freshness
Because Perplexity reads the live web, current pages can win for topics where things change, such as prices, laws, software features or events. Keep dates visible and update content when facts change.
Site and brand signals
5. Reputation in the niche
Well-known sites in a field, such as recognised trade publications, are often cited. For a smaller brand, being mentioned by those sites helps people and AI tools see you as part of the conversation.
6. Consistency across the web
When your own site and third-party sources agree on your facts, those facts look reliable. Conflicting details create doubt.
7. Clear authorship
Real author names and relevant credentials help readers trust content, especially for health, finance, legal and technical topics.
Technical signals
8. Crawler access
If Perplexity’s crawler or the search systems it relies on cannot reach your page, it cannot be a source. Check robots.txt, firewall rules and login walls. See the technical setup guide.
9. Readable structure
Text in plain HTML, clear headings, lists and tables are easier to parse than content hidden in images, PDFs or heavy scripts.
How to use this list
Score one important page against each signal from 0 to 2: 0 means missing, 1 means partly there, 2 means strong. A page scoring 18 is in good shape. A page scoring 8 has clear room to grow. Then fix the weakest signals first.
Signals people overrate
- Word count. Longer is not better if the answer is buried.
- Keyword repetition. Repeating a phrase does not add meaning.
- Domain age alone. An old site with vague pages is still a weak source.
To see how these signals play out in practice, run the experiment described in why some Perplexity sources come first.
A worked example
Imagine a solar installer in Montpellier with a page called “Our Solar Solutions”. Scored against the nine signals, it gets low marks for question match, direct answers and specific details, and medium marks for everything else. The fix is not a new website. The installer renames the page “Solar Panel Installation Costs in Montpellier”, opens with a typical price range and installation time, adds a short list of what affects the price, and names the certifications its installers hold. It also asks two local partners to update outdated descriptions of the company. The same page now scores much higher on paper. Whether Perplexity chooses it depends on the alternatives, but the page is now a real candidate.
