Technical Setup to Make Your Website a Perplexity Source
Before content can be cited, Perplexity has to reach and read it. This technical checklist covers crawler access, rendering, sitemaps and page markup.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
To make your website usable as a Perplexity source, its crawler and search systems must be able to reach your pages, read the main text without running complex scripts, and understand what each page is about. Great content cannot be cited if it cannot be read. This page is a technical checklist you can share with your developer.
1. Check robots.txt
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. Look for rules that block all bots or specific AI crawlers. Perplexity publishes the name of its crawler, PerplexityBot, in its own documentation. If you want your pages to be eligible as sources, do not disallow it. Also check that you are not blocking common search engine bots, because many AI tools rely on wider search infrastructure. The AI crawler user-agent list helps you review each bot.
2. Check firewalls and bot protection
Security services sometimes block unknown bots automatically. That can quietly stop AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them. Ask your hosting or CDN provider whether verified AI and search crawlers are being challenged or blocked, and adjust rules if you want them allowed.
3. Make sure main text is in the HTML
If your page content only appears after JavaScript runs in the browser, some crawlers may see an empty page. Test by viewing the page source, not the rendered page. Your headings, paragraphs and key facts should be visible there. Server-side rendering or static generation solves this for most modern sites.
4. Keep a clean sitemap
- Publish an XML sitemap listing all pages you want found.
- Remove redirected, deleted and duplicate URLs from it.
- Update it automatically when you publish new pages.
- Reference it in robots.txt with a
Sitemap:line.

5. Fix status codes and redirects
Important pages should return a normal 200 status. Avoid long redirect chains and soft 404 pages that show “not found” text with a 200 code. Broken internal links waste crawl effort and make your site look neglected.
6. Speed and size
Very slow pages or pages weighed down by huge scripts may be fetched less reliably. Compress images, remove unused scripts and keep your main content near the top of the HTML.
7. Add helpful structured data
Schema.org markup such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Product and FAQPage describes your facts in a standard format. It does not guarantee anything, but it helps machines read details like your address, prices and opening hours correctly. See schema markup for AI understanding.
8. Use clear titles and headings
Each page needs a unique title and one main heading that describes the topic. Use subheadings that match real questions. This is basic SEO, and it also helps any system decide whether your page fits a question.
Test it
- Fetch a page with a simple tool like
curland confirm the main text appears. - Check server logs for visits from the crawlers you allowed.
- Ask Perplexity a question your page answers well, and see whether your site is among the sources over the following weeks.
Technical access is necessary but not sufficient. Once it is in place, focus on content quality. Our beginner guide to Perplexity citations explains that side.
