How to Write Content That AI Assistants Can Quote
AI assistants lift short passages from pages. Learn sentence-level writing techniques, with before-and-after examples, that make your content easy to extract.

AI assistants rarely use a whole page. They pick out short passages that answer the question. Content is easy to extract when each passage is self-contained, names its subject, gives specific facts and answers one question clearly. Small writing changes at sentence level can make a page much easier to quote accurately.
Technique 1: Name the Subject Every Time
Pronouns lose their meaning once a passage is taken out of context.
- Before: “It is available in three sizes and ships in two days.”
- After: “The Alpine 40 backpack is available in three sizes and ships within two working days in France.”
Technique 2: Answer, Then Explain
Put the answer in the first sentence of a section, then add reasons and detail.
- Before: “There are many factors to consider when thinking about the cost of window cleaning…”
- After: “Window cleaning for a three-bedroom house in Bristol usually costs between £20 and £35 per visit, depending on access and window count.”
Technique 3: Swap Vague Words for Specifics
Words like “fast”, “affordable” and “many” give assistants nothing to repeat. Use real numbers and names you can stand behind: delivery times, price ranges, supported tools, service areas.
Technique 4: One Idea per Paragraph
A paragraph that covers pricing, shipping and returns at once is hard to extract cleanly. Split it into three short paragraphs under clear sub-headings. Each one can then answer a different question.
Technique 5: Mirror the Question in the Heading
Headings that match natural questions help assistants connect a section to a query. “Can I return a used mattress?” works better than “Our Promise”. Keep the heading honest and specific.
Technique 6: Use Lists for Steps and Criteria
Steps, requirements and options are easier to lift as lists. For example, a tax adviser’s page on “documents needed to file self-employed taxes” should list each document rather than describe them in one long sentence.
Technique 7: Define Terms Once, Clearly
If you use a term your buyers may not know, define it in one sentence: “A bridging loan is a short-term loan used to buy a new home before the old one is sold.” Assistants often quote definitions like this.
Technique 8: State Who Something Is For
Recommendation questions include conditions: “for beginners”, “for small teams”, “for sensitive skin”. Write sentences that link your offer to those conditions: “This course suits complete beginners with no coding experience.”
Check Your Work
- Copy any paragraph from your page into a blank document.
- Read it alone. Does it make sense? Does it name the subject? Does it contain a fact?
- If not, rewrite it using the techniques above.
Pair good writing with good structure. Our guide on LLM content structure best practices covers headings and layout, and structuring content for retrieval systems explains how AI tools split pages into chunks.
Avoid Over-Optimising
Do not stuff pages with repeated questions or keywords to look AI-friendly. Write for a busy human reader first. Clear, specific, well-organised writing serves both people and machines; awkward, repetitive text serves neither.
