Not in AI Answers? A Diagnosis Guide to Find the Cause
When AI assistants never mention your business, there is usually a clear reason. Work through these checks to find yours before you change anything.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
If AI assistants never mention your business, the cause is usually one of four things: they cannot read your site, they are unsure what you do, too few other sites talk about you, or your content does not match the questions people ask. Diagnose first. Fixing the wrong problem wastes months, and no single change can force a mention.
Test 1: Ask the Right Questions
Start by testing the way customers really search. Write down ten prompts, mixing three types:
- Brand prompts: “What is [your company]?” and “Is [your company] good for small teams?”
- Category prompts: “Best accounting software for freelancers in Belgium”
- Problem prompts: “How do I send invoices automatically from my phone?”
Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Answers vary from run to run, so try each prompt more than once. Write down where you appear, where you do not, and who appears instead.
Test 2: Does AI Know You Exist?
If brand prompts return “I don’t have information about that company” or a confused answer, your problem is basic awareness. Common causes: a new brand, a name shared with other companies, or very few mentions outside your own website. The fix is building clear facts and outside mentions, covered in how to become a trusted source for LLMs.
Test 3: Can Crawlers Reach Your Site?
Assistants that search the web need to load your pages. Check these points:
- Your
robots.txtdoes not block the search bots of AI companies or Bing and Google - Key pages are not hidden behind logins, cookie walls or heavy scripts
- Your site is indexed in Bing, which Copilot relies on, and in Google
- Pages load quickly and return normal status codes
Test 4: Are Your Facts Consistent?
If assistants mention you but get details wrong, such as old prices, the wrong city or a service you stopped, the problem is inconsistent information. Compare your website, business listings, social profiles and review sites. Every mismatch gives AI a reason to doubt. Our page on correcting wrong AI information explains the clean-up.
Test 5: Do You Answer the Category Question?
Many businesses are known to AI by name but never appear in category answers. Usually their site describes the company but never clearly states who it is for, where it works and how it compares. Add plain pages such as “Payroll software for restaurants” or “Emergency plumber in north Dublin”, with specific details that match real prompts.
Test 6: Who Gets Mentioned Instead?
Look at the competitors that do appear. Search for them and note where they are mentioned: comparison articles, review sites, industry directories, trade press. These are the sources AI is drawing on. Aim to earn a genuine place in the same kinds of sources. See when AI shows a competitor instead of you for more.
Make a Short Fix List
After testing, write down your top three causes and one action for each. For example: unblock search bots this week, fix your address on four directories this month, publish two comparison pages next month. Re-run the same prompts every few weeks with the same wording so you can see real change.
