7 Mistakes That Keep UK Businesses Out of AI Recommendations
Many London and UK companies are invisible in AI answers for fixable reasons. These seven mistakes come up again and again, with a simple fix for each.

The short answer
Most UK businesses missing from AI answers are not being penalised. They are simply unclear. Vague service pages, inconsistent listings, missing UK-specific details and blocked crawlers make it hard for an assistant to recommend them with confidence. Fixing these basics often helps more than anything else.
Mistake 1: Writing for the US by accident
Many sites use templates or copy written for American readers. Prices in dollars, US spelling and terms like “attorney” or “zip code” signal the wrong market. A UK buyer asking “accountant for sole traders in Croydon” expects pounds, HMRC references and UK terms. Make sure your pages read as clearly British.
Mistake 2: Saying “London” and nothing more
London is huge. People ask for “a locksmith in Walthamstow” or “a nursery near Clapham Common”. If your site only says “serving London”, you lose those specific matches. Name the boroughs and areas you genuinely cover, and give real detail for each.
Mistake 3: Company details that do not match
Your trading name, Companies House name, Google Business Profile and directory listings may all differ slightly. Assistants compare sources. Choose one consistent version and explain the relationship on your About page, for example “Smith & Co is the trading name of Smith Advisory Ltd”.
Mistake 4: Ignoring the review sites UK buyers use
UK customers read Trustpilot, Google reviews, and sector platforms like Checkatrade for trades or Doctify for clinics. If your reviews live only on one platform, or are years old, assistants have little recent evidence. Ask real customers for honest reviews regularly. Never buy them. Our page on fixing review visibility explains more.

Mistake 5: Hiding key facts in PDFs and images
Price lists in PDFs, opening hours in a banner image and menus as photos are hard for assistants to read. Put important facts in plain text on a normal web page.
Mistake 6: Blocking crawlers without knowing it
Some hosting providers, security plugins and CDN settings block AI crawlers by default. Check your robots.txt and firewall rules. If Bing cannot reach your pages, Copilot will struggle to cite them, and the same applies to other assistants that browse the web.
Mistake 7: Chasing shortcuts
Paid “listicle” placements, forum spam and bought links are tempting when competitors seem ahead. They tend to be removed, flagged or ignored, and they can damage trust in your brand. The slower route works better: useful content, real press coverage in UK trade and local media, and genuine customer reviews.
A quick UK self-check
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot what they know about your business.
- Check whether they give the right location, services and prices.
- Ask a buying question, such as “best [service] in [area]”, and see who appears.
- List every wrong or missing fact and trace it back to its source.
