Perplexity
Your reviews may not show up in AI answers because they sit where AI cannot easily read them, are spread too thin across platforms, or say little about specific products and services. AI assistants form opinions from review platforms, maps, articles and your own pages. Making real reviews readable, specific and present on trusted platforms improves the chance they are reflected.
How AI uses reviews
When someone asks “is [business] any good?” or “best-rated electrician in Nantes”, an assistant looks for signs of reputation. It may summarise ratings and comments from map listings and well-known review platforms, or quote buying guides and articles. It rarely lists every review. It looks for patterns: what people praise, what they complain about, and how many people say so.
Common reasons reviews are invisible
- Reviews loaded by a script. Many review widgets load after the page, so crawlers may see an empty box.
- Too few reviews on the platforms that matter. Many reviews on one small platform and almost none on the major ones.
- Vague reviews. “Great service!” tells AI little. “Fixed our boiler the same day in Austin” tells it a lot.
- Old reviews only. A strong history but nothing recent.
- Restricted pages. Review pages blocked by robots.txt or behind logins.
Make your reviews readable
- Show a selection of real reviews on your site as plain text in the HTML, with the reviewer’s first name and date where they agree.
- Keep review content on pages AI crawlers can reach. See technical SEO for AI crawlers.
- Use review structured data correctly, following search engine guidelines, which limit self-serving review markup in some cases.
- Link from your site to your profiles on independent review platforms.
Collect more useful reviews, honestly
Ask every customer, not only the happy ones you pick. Send the request soon after the purchase or service, with a direct link to the platform. You can suggest that they mention what they bought and where, but never script their words or offer rewards for positive reviews. Spread requests across the platforms that matter in your sector, such as map listings for local businesses or software review platforms for SaaS.
Never buy reviews, post them yourself or swap reviews with other businesses. Platforms detect and remove them, and some regulators treat fake reviews as illegal. Our page on online reputation for AI tools covers the risks.
Respond to reviews
Replies show you are active and fair. Thank people for specific feedback and answer complaints calmly with the steps you took. A thoughtful reply to a bad review can change how the overall picture reads, both to people and to AI.
Check the result
Ask assistants “What do customers say about [business]?” and “Is [business] reliable?”. Compare the summary with your real reviews. If AI mentions an old complaint you have fixed, publish a clear note on the change and make sure recent reviews reflect it. For more on reviews and AI, see customer review AI integration.
