🔵 For businesses that want more customers from AI search
Building an LLM Citation Strategy for Your Brand
An LLM citation strategy decides which questions you want to be cited for, which sources you need, and in what order to act. Here is a strategic framework.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
An LLM citation strategy is a plan for which buyer questions your brand should be visible for in AI answers, and which content and third-party sources will give assistants reasons to mention you. A good strategy is selective: it focuses on questions linked to revenue where you have real expertise, and it combines your own content with genuine coverage elsewhere.
Start With Business Goals, Not Prompts
Ask what AI visibility should achieve. Common goals:
- Be considered: appear in “best X for Y” lists for your category.
- Be described correctly: make sure assistants state the right prices, features and markets.
- Own a niche: become the go-to source for a specific problem.
- Support a launch: help assistants learn about a new product or market.
Each goal leads to different prompts and different work. Pick one or two to start.
Map the Prompt Landscape
Group buyer questions by stage of the buying journey:
- Problem-aware: “Why does my website load slowly on mobile?”
- Solution-aware: “Do I need a CDN for a small online shop?”
- Vendor-comparison: “Best CDN for Shopify stores in Europe”.
- Brand-specific: “Is [brand] GDPR compliant?”
Then score each prompt on two things: how valuable it is for sales, and how realistic it is for you to be cited. Start with prompts that score well on both. A niche question you can answer better than anyone is usually a better first target than a crowded “best of” prompt where large publishers already dominate.
Balance Owned, Earned and Shared Sources
Owned
Your website, help center, documentation and blog. You control facts and depth here.
Earned
Press coverage, independent reviews, analyst mentions, expert roundups. Assistants often lean on these for comparison questions, because they are not written by the brand itself.
Shared
Profiles and listings on directories, marketplaces and professional networks. These confirm basic facts and categories.
A brand with only owned content often struggles on “best of” prompts. A brand with only earned coverage may be described inaccurately. You need all three.
Plan in 90-Day Cycles
AI answers change often and take time to reflect new content, so work in cycles:
- Weeks 1 to 2: measure current mentions and citations for your priority prompts.
- Weeks 3 to 8: publish or improve owned content, fix listings, start earned-media outreach.
- Weeks 9 to 12: measure again, compare with the baseline, choose the next priorities.
Define What Success Looks Like
Choose a few simple measures: share of priority prompts where you are mentioned, number of prompts where your pages are cited, accuracy of brand facts, and referral traffic from AI tools where your analytics can see it. Accept that results vary between assistants and runs. See measuring AI visibility for more.
Who Should Own the Strategy
AI visibility touches several teams. Content writers create pages, PR earns coverage, product or support teams own documentation, and someone technical controls crawler access and structured data. Give one person overall ownership, usually in marketing, and agree a short monthly meeting where each team reports on its part. Without a clear owner, tasks fall between teams and the strategy stalls.
Guardrails for the Strategy
- No fake reviews, paid forum posts or link schemes.
- No promises to leadership of guaranteed placements.
- Every claim on your pages must be true and sourced.
