How to Build Your Own Industry Report on AI Visibility
Want to know which brands AI assistants recommend in your industry? You can build a simple, honest benchmark report yourself in a few hours.

An industry AI visibility report shows which brands AI assistants name for the questions buyers ask in your sector, and which sources they rely on. You can build one yourself: choose a fixed set of prompts, run them across several assistants, record the brands and sources mentioned, and repeat over time. It turns guesswork into a clear picture of your market.
Why build one
Most businesses only check their own name. A sector view tells you more: who AI sees as the leaders, which smaller players punch above their weight, and which websites act as gatekeepers. That shapes where you spend effort.
Step 1: Define the scope
Pick one market and one geography. “Accounting software for freelancers in France” is a usable scope. “Business software” is not. Decide which assistants to include, for example ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude.
Step 2: Write a balanced prompt set
Write 25 to 50 prompts, split across:
- Category prompts: “best invoicing app for freelancers in France”
- Need prompts: “how can a freelancer automate VAT on invoices”
- Comparison prompts: “alternatives to [leading brand]”
- Budget prompts: “cheapest invoicing tool for a micro-entrepreneur”
Use the words buyers use, not your marketing terms. Keep the set fixed so later rounds compare fairly.
Step 3: Run and record
Run each prompt in each assistant, ideally in a fresh session without personal history. Record in a spreadsheet:
- Brands named, in order of appearance.
- Sources cited, where shown.
- Any wrong or outdated facts.
- Date and assistant.
Answers vary between runs, so if possible run key prompts twice and note differences.
Step 4: Analyse
Turn the raw data into a few clear findings:
- Mention share: for each brand, the percentage of prompts where it appears.
- Source map: the websites cited most often. These are your priority places to be present.
- Prompt gaps: prompts where no clear leader appears. These are open opportunities.
- Platform differences: brands that do well in one assistant but not another.
Step 5: Decide what to do
Each finding should lead to an action. A frequently cited review site where you have no profile is a clear next step. A gap prompt is a page you can write. A competitor dominating comparison prompts tells you to publish fair comparisons of your own.
Being honest with the results
Label your report as a snapshot from your own testing. Do not present it as an official ranking or publish numbers about competitors as fact without context. If you share it publicly, explain the method, the date and the limits. A transparent report can itself become a useful, citable resource for your industry.

How often to update the report
Quarterly works well for most industries. It gives enough time for changes to show while still catching new competitors early. In fast-moving sectors such as software or consumer tech, a monthly pass on your top ten prompts is worth the effort. Always keep the old snapshots: the trend over time is more valuable than any single report.
