The short answer

ChatGPT doesn’t have a fixed ranking like a search results page. Answers change with wording, user and time. “Ranking” in ChatGPT means how often you are mentioned for a set of questions, how prominently, how accurately and whether your pages are cited. You improve that by measuring regularly and fixing the gaps the data shows.

Four metrics that replace “rank”

  • Mention rate: the share of tested answers that include your brand. If you’re named in 6 of 20 answers, your mention rate is 30%.
  • Prominence: whether you are named first, in the middle, or only as an afterthought.
  • Accuracy and tone: whether the description of you is correct and positive.
  • Citations: how often your own pages appear as linked sources.

Track the same metrics for two or three main competitors to see your share of voice.

How to set up a tracking sheet

  1. List 20 to 50 prompts grouped by intent: “best”, “vs”, “how much”, “near me”, problem questions.
  2. For each prompt, add columns for date, assistant, mentioned (yes/no), position, accuracy notes and cited URLs.
  3. Run each prompt at least twice per round, ideally in a clean session without personal memory.
  4. Repeat rounds monthly at a similar time.

A prompt like “best language school for adults in Madrid” might show you in one run and not the next. Over many runs, the pattern becomes clear.

Reading the results

Low mention rate, competitors everywhere

Check which sources are cited for competitors. They probably have stronger coverage in reviews, directories or articles. Focus on earning those mentions.

Mentioned, but described wrongly

Your facts are inconsistent somewhere. Audit your website, listings and old press. See how to control how AI describes your brand.

Mentioned for some intents, not others

Maybe you appear for “best” questions but not “how much” questions. That usually means a missing page, such as a clear pricing page.

Never cited as a source

Your pages may not be indexed, may be blocked to crawlers, or may not answer questions directly.

Choosing the right prompts

Your tracking is only as good as your prompt list. Build it from real sources: questions from sales calls, support emails, search console queries and reviews. Include the words customers actually use, not your internal product names. Keep a few broad prompts (“best language school in Madrid”) and many specific ones (“evening Spanish classes for working adults in Madrid, small groups”). Specific prompts are often where smaller businesses can win, because fewer competitors match every detail.

Review the list each quarter. Remove prompts nobody asks and add new ones as your offer changes.

Improving your position

Work in cycles. Each month, pick the three prompts with the biggest gap, make one targeted change for each, such as a new page, a fixed listing or a review push, and measure again. Avoid changing everything at once, or you won’t know what helped.

Be careful with “rank tracking” claims

Some tools show a single “ChatGPT rank” number. Ask how it is calculated, how many prompts and runs are behind it, and whether you can see the raw answers. A score without the underlying answers is hard to trust. For tool options, see tracking your AI search rankings.
