How to Influence the Words AI Uses to Describe Your Brand
You cannot edit an AI answer directly, but you can shape the description it repeats. Start with the words you publish about yourself.

You cannot control an AI brand description the way you control an ad. You can influence it. AI assistants repeat the description that appears most clearly and most often in sources they trust, so the practical job is to publish one sharp description and get it echoed in independent places.
Why AI Describes You the Way It Does
Ask an assistant “what is [your brand]?” and it will compress everything it has seen into one or two sentences. If your homepage says “innovative solutions for modern teams”, a directory says “HR software” and a news article calls you “a payroll startup”, the AI will pick one, blend them or hedge. Vague wording on your own site leaves the choice to others.
Write the Sentence You Want Repeated
Draft a single descriptive sentence built from four parts:
- What you are in common words: “an online booking tool”, not “a growth engine”.
- Who it is for: “for independent physiotherapy clinics”.
- What makes you different, if it is true and checkable: “with built-in insurance claims in Germany”.
- Where you operate, if it matters to buyers.
Example: “An online booking tool for independent physiotherapy clinics, with built-in insurance claims for German practices.” An assistant can quote that almost word for word.
Place the Sentence Where AI Looks
- The first paragraph of your homepage and About page.
- Your meta description and Organization structured data.
- LinkedIn, Crunchbase-style company profiles, app stores and industry directories.
- Press kit and boilerplate at the end of press releases.
- Author bios when your team writes guest articles.
Small wording variations are fine. The core category and audience should never change.
Audit the Words AI Uses Now
Run a simple word audit. Ask four or five assistants “what is [brand]?”, “who is [brand] for?” and “what are the downsides of [brand]?”. Copy the answers into a document and highlight:
- Category words (are you called the right kind of product?).
- Audience words (do they name the right customers?).
- Negative or outdated claims (old pricing, a discontinued product, a past problem).
- Missing strengths you consider important.
Each highlight points to a fix. Wrong category means your own pages are unclear. Outdated claims usually trace back to an old article or profile. Missing strengths often mean no independent source mentions them yet.
Shift Descriptions With Evidence, Not Adjectives
Words like “leading” or “best” rarely carry over into AI answers. Facts do. If you want to be described as “fast to set up”, publish a setup guide that shows the steps and time involved, and encourage customers to mention it in honest reviews. If you want to be known for a specialty, write the most useful page on that specialty.
When the Description Is Wrong
Fix the source before you complain to the AI. Update your own pages, correct directory listings, ask publishers to update old articles, then use the feedback buttons inside the assistants. Assistants that search the web, like Perplexity or ChatGPT with browsing, can reflect fixes sooner than answers based only on older training data.
