Claude builds answers from two main places: knowledge learned during training, and live web pages it finds when web search is turned on. When it searches, it looks for pages that clearly answer the question, come from credible sites and are easy to read. Anthropic does not publish an exact formula, so the best approach is to make your information clear, accurate and widely confirmed.

Source type 1: What Claude learned in training

Like other large language models, Claude was trained on a large amount of text, including public web content. From this it learns which companies exist, what they do and how people talk about them. This knowledge has a cutoff date, so recent changes such as a new product or a price update may not be included.

What this means for you: brands that were described often and consistently across many credible pages before the cutoff tend to be better known to the model. You cannot add yourself to past training, but you can make sure future crawls find accurate, useful information.

Source type 2: Live web search

When Claude uses web search, it runs queries, reads a set of result pages and writes an answer, usually with links to the pages it used. Here, your current website and current mentions matter directly. A page published last week can be used if it is found and judged relevant.

Pages tend to be useful in this step when they:

  • Answer the question near the top in plain sentences.
  • Contain specific facts such as prices, locations, features or dates.
  • Load as normal text rather than being hidden in scripts or images.
  • Are allowed to be crawled by search and AI bots.

Source type 3: What the user provides

Users can paste documents, upload files or connect tools. In that case Claude relies heavily on that material. This is not something a brand controls, but it is a reminder that clear product sheets and public documentation get reused in many ways, including when a buyer pastes your pricing page into a chat to compare options.

Signals that seem to matter for credibility

Because no formula is published, think in terms of what a careful researcher would trust:

  1. Agreement across sources. If your site, a trade magazine and a directory all say the same thing, that fact looks solid.
  2. Specific, checkable details. “Ships to 12 EU countries from Rotterdam” is more useful than “fast worldwide delivery”.
  3. Independent mentions. Reviews and articles written by others carry weight that self-description cannot.
  4. Freshness where it matters. For prices, opening hours or software features, current pages beat old ones.

The same ideas apply when Claude decides which companies to name. Our article on how LLMs decide which companies to mention covers that side in more detail.

What you can do this month

  • Check that your robots.txt does not block the crawlers you want to reach your site. See technical SEO for AI crawlers.
  • Rewrite your main service pages so the first paragraph says who you help, with what, and where.
  • List three outside sites where your ideal buyers research, and aim to be accurately described on each.
  • Ask Claude about your category with web search on and note which pages it cites. Those are the kinds of sources you want to resemble or appear on.
