How AI Verifies Information Before It Mentions a Business
AI assistants do not check facts the way a human editor does. They lean on agreement between sources, source reputation and freshness. Here is what that means for you.

AI assistants do not call your office or inspect your documents. They judge information mostly by whether several trustworthy sources agree, whether the source looks reliable for the topic, and whether it seems current. If your facts are consistent and repeated in good places, AI is far more likely to state them confidently.
Signal 1: Agreement between sources
When an assistant reads several pages and they say the same thing, it treats that fact as safer to repeat. When they disagree, it may hedge, pick one at random, or leave the detail out.
Example: a physiotherapy clinic in Geneva lists Saturday opening on its website, but its map listing says closed on Saturdays. Asked “physio open Saturday in Geneva”, an assistant may skip the clinic entirely because it cannot be sure.
Signal 2: The reputation of the source
Not all pages carry the same weight. For a law firm, a bar association directory or a respected legal guide counts for more than an unknown blog. For software, established review platforms and documentation sites matter. For restaurants, food guides and review sites carry weight. A model has learned which kinds of sources tend to be reliable in each field.
Signal 3: Freshness
For prices, opening hours, product ranges and staff, newer information usually wins, especially when the assistant uses live search. Pages with clear “last updated” dates and current details are easier to trust than pages that look abandoned.
Signal 4: Specific, checkable statements
Vague claims like “best service in the region” are hard to verify and are often ignored. Concrete facts are easier to use: “Installs residential solar panels in Hérault and Gard since 2015, quotes within 48 hours.” The more specific and checkable a fact is, the more useful it is to the model.
Signal 5: Your own site as the anchor
Your website is often treated as the primary source for basic facts about you, such as your name, services and contact details. Third-party sources then confirm or contradict it. A clear about page and well-structured contact and service pages give the model a stable anchor. Structured data such as Organization or LocalBusiness markup can make those facts easier for machines to read.
A fact alignment checklist
Go through these items and confirm they match everywhere your business appears:
- Exact business name and spelling, including legal name if different.
- Address, service area and phone number.
- Opening hours, including holidays.
- Main services or products, described in the same words.
- Price ranges or starting prices, if you publish them.
- Founding year, team size or certifications you mention.
Check your website, your map listings, your main directories, review sites and social profiles. Fix the outliers first. Our guide on how to verify brand data for AI covers the details.
What AI cannot verify well
AI cannot confirm quality from your own claims. It cannot tell if an award is real unless the awarding body mentions it. It may struggle with brands that share a name with something else. In those cases, independent mentions and clear context (“Orion, the accounting software for dentists”) help it avoid confusion.
When AI gets it wrong
Even with good signals, assistants sometimes state outdated or wrong facts. The fix is usually the same: correct the source pages, make the right fact clearer and more widespread, and give it time. See how AI cross-checks multiple sources for more examples.
