How AI Models Find Information: Training Data vs Live Search
AI assistants answer from two places: what they learned during training and what they look up on the web at the moment you ask. Here is how each one works.

AI models find information in two main ways. First, they learned patterns from a huge amount of public text during training, which gives them general knowledge up to a cutoff date. Second, many assistants can now search the web live and read pages before they answer, which lets them use fresh information and cite sources.
Source one: what the model learned in training
Before a model like the ones behind ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude is released, it is trained on large collections of text: public web pages, books, reference works and other material. The model does not store a neat copy of each page. It learns which words, names and facts tend to appear together.
For a business, this means a simple thing. If your brand was mentioned often and clearly across many reputable pages before the cutoff, the model is more likely to “know” you. If you were barely mentioned, or mentioned with mixed facts, the model may know little or get details wrong.
- Strength: fast answers with no lookup.
- Weakness: knowledge stops at a date and can be outdated.
- What helps you: being described the same way in many trusted places over time.
Source two: live web search and retrieval
Many assistants can now browse. ChatGPT can search the web, Perplexity shows source links next to its answers, Microsoft Copilot uses Bing, and Google AI Overviews appear inside Google Search results. When search is used, the assistant turns your question into one or more search queries, reads a handful of pages, and writes an answer from them.
This is good news for smaller brands. You do not have to wait for the next training run. If a clear, well-structured page on your site or on a trusted third-party site answers the question, it can be picked up in days or weeks rather than months.
- Strength: fresh, often with visible citations.
- Weakness: it only reads a few pages, so it favours pages that rank well and answer directly.
- What helps you: crawlable pages, clear headings, direct answers and up-to-date facts.
Source three: connected data and tools
Some assistants also pull from structured sources: map and business listings, shopping feeds, or apps a user has connected. A question like “pharmacy open now near me” may lean more on listing data than on any blog post. Keeping your business profiles accurate is part of being findable.
How the model decides what to say
Whatever the source, the model then writes an answer in its own words. It tends to favour information that:
- Appears in several independent places, not just on your own site.
- Comes from sources that look reliable for the topic, such as known review sites, trade publications or official registries.
- Matches the exact question asked, for example “accountant for freelancers in Bordeaux” rather than “accounting services”.
- Is easy to extract: short definitions, lists, prices, locations and clear facts.
You can read more on this in how large language models discover and trust brands.
What this means for your business
You cannot edit a model’s training data, and nobody can sell you a place in it. What you can do is make your business easy to find and easy to trust in both channels:
- Publish pages that answer the real questions your buyers ask, in plain words.
- Keep your name, address, prices and services identical everywhere they appear.
- Earn mentions on independent sites your industry already trusts.
- Make sure AI crawlers and search engines can access your key pages. See technical SEO for AI crawlers.
Training data shapes long-term memory. Live search shapes what is said today. A good strategy works on both.
