How to Format Content So AI Can Quote It as a Snippet
AI answers often lift a short passage, list or table from a source. Here are the formats that make your content easy to extract, with examples for each.

AI tools tend to quote short, self-contained passages: a clear definition, a numbered list of steps, a comparison table or a concise answer under a question heading. Formatting your content in these shapes makes it easier to extract. It does not guarantee a snippet, but it removes a common reason for being passed over.
What “AI Snippets” Means
There is no single official “AI snippet” feature. The term usually describes the bits of text that Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot and ChatGPT with search pull from sources to build an answer, often with a link. Classic Google featured snippets work in a similar way, and the formats that win those also suit AI tools. For the classic version, see optimizing for featured snippets.
Format 1: The Definition Block
For “what is” questions, put a 40 to 60 word definition directly under a heading that asks the question.
Example heading: “What is a heat recovery ventilation system?”
Example answer: “A heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system brings fresh air into a home and removes stale air, while transferring heat from the outgoing air to the incoming air. It keeps rooms ventilated in winter without losing most of the warmth.”
Format 2: The Numbered Steps List
For “how to” questions, use an ordered list where each step starts with a verb and fits in one or two lines. Put any warnings in a separate sentence after the list rather than inside steps.
Format 3: The Comparison Table
For “X vs Y” or “which option” questions, use a real HTML table with clear column headings: option, price range, best for, main drawback. Avoid merged cells and images of tables.
Format 4: The Question-and-Answer Pair
Put each common question as a heading, followed immediately by a direct answer of two or three sentences, then any extra detail. This works well at the end of service and product pages. Pair it with FAQ structured data where appropriate; see optimizing FAQs for AI answer boxes.
Format 5: The Short Summary
Long guides benefit from a “Key points” list at the top: three to five one-line takeaways. These are easy to quote and help readers too.
Writing Rules That Help Every Format
- One idea per sentence. Long sentences with several clauses are harder to lift cleanly.
- Avoid “as mentioned above” or “this” without a clear subject. Quoted text loses its surroundings.
- Include the subject in the answer: “A building permit in Quebec usually takes…” rather than “It usually takes…”.
- Keep numbers and units together and precise.
Mistakes That Block Extraction
- Key information inside images, sliders or tabs that load only on click.
- Answers hidden behind “read more” scripts or sign-up walls.
- Over-long intros before the answer.
- Several conflicting answers on the same page.
Test Your Formatting
Pick a question your page should answer and ask it in Perplexity or Copilot, which show sources. If another page is quoted, compare its format with yours. Often the difference is simply that their answer is shorter and sits right under the heading.
