The short answer

ChatGPT usually skips a product because it can’t find clear information about it, can’t tell who it is for, or sees too few independent sources mentioning it. Most of these problems are fixable: clearer product pages, consistent data, crawler access and genuine third-party coverage. Below are the nine mistakes we see most often.

1. The product page doesn’t say who it’s for

“The ultimate solution for modern teams” matches no question. Buyers ask things like “time tracking app for a 5-person design studio”. Fix: state the audience, use case and size of customer in the first lines.

2. Key facts are hidden

Prices behind “contact us”, specs inside a PDF, features shown only in images. Fix: put price ranges, main specs and limits in plain page text. If pricing is custom, say what it depends on and give a starting point.

3. Crawlers are blocked

Some sites block all bots by default, including the ones search features rely on. Fix: review robots.txt and firewall settings, and allow search crawlers you want to be found by. Our guide to technical SEO for AI crawlers walks through it.

4. Your product has several names

“ProMix 2”, “Pro Mix II” and “PM2” may look like three products. Fix: pick one name and use it everywhere, including retailers and marketplaces.

5. No independent reviews

A product with no reviews outside its own site looks unproven. Fix: send samples or trials to relevant reviewers, ask real customers for honest reviews on the platforms your buyers read, and reply to feedback. Don’t buy reviews.

6. You avoid comparisons

Many prompts are “X vs Y” or “alternatives to X”. If you never mention competitors, there’s nothing linking you to those questions. Fix: publish fair comparison and alternatives pages with honest pros and cons.

7. Outdated information is still online

Old prices, discontinued models or a previous company name in directories can confuse answers. Fix: audit your listings, update or redirect old pages and ask sites with stale info to correct it.

8. You chase shortcuts

Spamming forums with product links, posting fake “user” recommendations, or buying placements on low-quality list sites can backfire. Communities remove spam, platforms penalise it and assistants may learn negative associations. Fix: take part in communities as a real, identified brand and contribute useful answers.

9. You only test once

AI answers vary between sessions and users. One missing mention doesn’t mean you’re invisible, and one lucky mention doesn’t mean you’ve arrived. Fix: test a set of prompts repeatedly over time and track the share of answers that include you.

Where to start

Pick your best-selling product. Ask ChatGPT five buyer questions it should answer, and note what appears. Then go through the list above for that one product before moving on to the next. Small, complete fixes beat a long list of half-done tasks. Re-test the same five questions a few weeks after each change and keep notes, so you learn which fixes matter most in your category.
