🔵 For businesses that want more customers from AI search
Is There a Generative AI Content Authority Score? An Honest Answer
No AI company publishes an authority score for your content. Here is what tools mean by the term and how to build a simple scorecard of your own.

There is no official “generative AI content authority score”. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft and other AI companies do not publish a number that rates your content’s authority. Scores you see in marketing tools are estimates built by those tools, each with its own method. They can be useful for tracking change over time, but they are not what AI assistants actually use to decide what to say.
Where These Scores Come From
Third-party tools usually combine signals they can observe from outside, such as:
- How often a brand is mentioned in AI answers for a set of test prompts
- How often the brand’s pages appear as cited sources
- Traditional SEO data such as backlinks and search rankings
- Content features like length, structure and freshness
Two tools can give the same site very different scores because they weigh these signals differently.
How to Read a Score Sensibly
- Compare over time, not across tools. A score going up in the same tool is more meaningful than one tool’s number versus another’s.
- Look underneath. Ask which prompts and answers created the score. If you cannot see them, the number is hard to act on.
- Check against reality. Ask assistants your key questions yourself. If the score says “strong” but you are never mentioned, trust the answers.
Build Your Own Simple Scorecard
You do not need a proprietary metric. Track a small set of observable facts each month:
- Mention rate: out of 20 fixed prompts, how many answers name you?
- Accuracy: how many of those mentions have correct facts?
- Citation count: how often your own pages appear as sources in assistants that show them, such as Perplexity and Copilot?
- Third-party presence: how many trusted directories, reviews and publications describe you accurately?
- Freshness: when were your top ten pages last updated?
Give each a simple 1–5 rating and keep it in a spreadsheet. Our guide on measuring AI visibility suggests how to pick the prompts.
Example
A garden design studio in Bordeaux tracks 20 prompts like “who designs small city gardens in Bordeaux” and “cost of a garden design plan in Gironde”. In the first month it is named in 2 answers, one with an old phone number. After fixing its listings and publishing a clear pricing page, it re-checks the same prompts monthly. The scorecard shows whether the work is moving in the right direction, without pretending to measure anything secret.
What Actually Raises “Authority”
Whatever a tool calls it, the underlying work is the same: expert, clear content; consistent facts across the web; honest reviews; and mentions in sources your buyers trust. For a list of these signals, see AI authority signals.
Beware of Score-Based Promises
If a provider promises to raise your “AI authority score” to a certain number by a certain date, ask how that number relates to real mentions. A rising score with no change in actual answers does not help your business.
Keep the Scorecard Small
Resist adding dozens of metrics. Five clear measures, checked on the same prompts each month, will tell you more than a crowded dashboard that nobody reads.
