AI authority signals are the clues that suggest your business is real, expert and reliable. They include clear identity facts, visible expertise, consistent information across the web, honest reviews, mentions in trusted sources, fresh content and technical access. No single signal decides an answer, but a business that scores well across most of them is easier for assistants to trust and cite.
How to Use This Checklist
Go through each item and mark it Pass or Fix. Be strict. Then start with the Fix items that take the least effort.
1. Identity Signals
- Your business name, address and contact details are on your site in plain text.
- You have an “About” page that says who runs the business and since when.
- Your site has
OrganizationorLocalBusinessstructured data that matches the visible facts. - Your social and directory profiles link back to your website.
2. Expertise Signals
- Key articles show a named author with relevant experience.
- You have at least one piece of content based on first-hand work: a method, an example, a lesson learned.
- Licences, certifications or memberships are listed where they genuinely apply.

3. Consistency Signals
- Prices, hours and services match on your site and every profile.
- Your category is described the same way everywhere.
- No old pages contradict current facts.
4. Reputation Signals
- You have recent, honest reviews on the platforms your buyers use.
- You reply to reviews, including critical ones.
- No fake or incentivised reviews exist that could be flagged.
5. Mention Signals
- At least a few independent sites mention you: trade media, local news, partner pages, associations.
- Those mentions describe you accurately.
- Mentions come from sources relevant to your sector, not random link sites.
6. Freshness Signals
- Your main pages show a recent update date.
- No discontinued products or expired offers remain live without a note.
- Your news or blog section is not years out of date.
7. Access Signals
- Search engine and AI search crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt or by your firewall.
- Key facts are in HTML text, not only in images or PDFs.
- Your site loads reliably and quickly.

Reading Your Results
If most Fix items are in identity, consistency or access, work there first: they are quick and affect everything else. If those pass but you score low on mentions and reputation, your next step is outreach and customer reviews, which take longer but carry weight.
Signals That Do Not Help
Buying links, publishing many thin pages, claiming false partnerships with AI companies or seeding forums with fake accounts may look like signals, but they are the opposite. They create a messy, untrustworthy footprint.
A Worked Example
A physiotherapy practice in Ghent runs the checklist. It passes identity and access: the website is clear and crawlable. It fails consistency, because its maps listing still shows the old address from before a move. It fails freshness, because the blog’s last post is three years old. Reputation is mixed: good reviews, but none answered. The practice fixes the address first, replies to recent reviews, then updates its three main service pages. Mentions and expertise become the focus for the next quarter.
