Featured Snippets, AI Overviews and Gemini: How They Connect
Featured snippets, AI Overviews and Gemini are different Google features. This page explains how they relate and how snippet-style formatting still helps.

The short answer
Featured snippets, AI Overviews and Gemini are three different Google experiences. Featured snippets quote one page at the top of search results. AI Overviews generate a summary in Google Search with links to several sources. Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, which can also use Search. They work differently, but the same snippet-style formatting, a clear question with a direct, well-structured answer, helps your content in all three.
Featured snippets
A featured snippet is a highlighted extract from one web page, shown above or near the top of regular results. It might be a short paragraph, a list or a table. Google chooses it automatically; you can’t request it. Pages that win snippets usually rank well already and answer the question in a compact, well-formatted way.
AI Overviews
AI Overviews appear in Google Search for some queries. Instead of quoting one page, they generate a summary and link to several supporting sources. Getting linked depends on being a relevant, high-quality result for that query and having passages that support the summary. See optimizing for AI Overviews.
Gemini
Gemini is a conversational assistant. It answers from its trained knowledge and can draw on Google Search for current information. Conversations are longer and more personal than a single search, such as “plan a gluten-free weekend menu for six people”, so answers combine many pieces of information.
What they have in common
All three need content that is:
- Indexed and ranking reasonably well in Google Search.
- Clearly structured, with the answer close to the question.
- Accurate, specific and from a credible site.
Snippet-style formatting techniques
The paragraph answer
Use the question as an H2 or H3. Follow it with a 40 to 60 word paragraph that answers it completely. Then expand below. Example heading: “How often should a boiler be serviced?” with a direct first sentence.
The list answer
For processes and rankings, use an ordered or unordered list right after the heading, with short items that each start with a verb or key term: “1. Turn off the water supply. 2. Drain the tank…”
The table answer
For comparisons, prices or specifications, use a simple HTML table with clear column headers, not an image of a table.
The definition answer
For “what is” questions, start with “[Term] is…” and keep the first sentence self-contained.
What not to do
- Don’t write a dozen near-identical Q&A pages for tiny keyword variations.
- Don’t put answers only in images, videos or downloadable PDFs.
- Don’t use the
nosnippetor restrictive snippet settings on pages you want quoted, unless you have a reason. These settings can limit how your content is shown in search features.
A worked example
A bike shop wants to be useful for “how often should I service my e-bike?”. It adds a section with that exact heading, a two-sentence answer giving a typical interval and what affects it, then a short list of signs a service is due. The same section can serve a snippet, support an AI Overview and help Gemini answer a follow-up question in conversation.
How to track all three
Use Google Search Console for search performance, check your key queries manually for snippets and AI Overviews, and ask Gemini the same questions in conversational form. Record which pages are used in each. For more, see how to get featured in AI Overviews.
