What Is E-E-A-T and Does It Matter for AI Answers?
E-E-A-T comes from Google’s quality guidelines. This beginner’s explainer shows what each letter means and how the same ideas shape which sources AI assistants trust.

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. It is a framework from Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines, used to describe what high-quality content looks like. AI assistants do not publish an E-E-A-T score, but they face the same problem: choosing reliable sources. So the qualities E-E-A-T describes tend to help content get used in AI answers too.
The Four Letters in Plain English
Experience
Has the author actually done the thing? A review of hiking boots by someone who walked 200 km in them shows experience. A summary of other reviews does not.
Expertise
Does the author have the knowledge or qualifications the topic needs? Tax advice from a certified accountant carries more weight than tax advice from an anonymous blog.
Authoritativeness
Is the site or person recognised as a go-to source by others? Mentions in respected publications, links from industry bodies and a known track record all count.
Trustworthiness
Google calls this the most important part. Is the information accurate, honest and safe? Are contact details, policies and ownership clear?
A Common Misunderstanding
E-E-A-T is not a single ranking factor or a setting you can switch on. It is a way of describing quality. Google uses many signals that line up with it, and human raters use the guidelines to evaluate results. Similarly, nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how each assistant weighs sources. But it is widely understood that they prefer content that is clear, accurate, attributed and consistent with other reliable sources.
Why It Carries Over to AI Assistants
- Google AI Overviews appear in Google Search and draw on the same web index Google ranks, so the same quality thinking applies.
- Assistants that browse, like ChatGPT with search, Perplexity and Copilot, pick a handful of pages to read and cite. Pages from recognised, trustworthy sources are natural choices.
- Training data reflects what is widely published and repeated. Brands that are mentioned accurately by many credible sources are more likely to be described well.
Where It Matters Most
Google gives special attention to “Your Money or Your Life” topics: health, finance, legal, safety. AI assistants are also cautious in these areas. If you are a clinic, a financial adviser or a law firm, showing real credentials and careful, reviewed content is especially important. See our page for financial advisors and AI tools as one example.
A Simple Example
Two pages explain how to winterise a garden irrigation system. One is written by “Admin” with generic tips. The other is written by a named irrigation installer with 15 years in the trade, shows photos from real jobs, lists the exact steps for two common systems, and links to the company’s contact and licence details. The second page is the one a careful AI system, and a careful human, would rather quote.
