ChatGPT Plugins for SEO: What Replaced Them and What Still Helps
ChatGPT plugins were retired and replaced by custom GPTs and built-in tools. Here is what SEO teams can use today, and how that differs from getting your brand into ChatGPT answers.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
The short answer
The original ChatGPT plugins were phased out and replaced by custom GPTs and built-in features like web browsing, file analysis and code execution. For SEO, these tools help with research, drafting and data analysis. They do not change how ChatGPT ranks or mentions your brand for other users. That depends on your public content and reputation.
What happened to plugins
Plugins were an early way to connect ChatGPT to outside services. OpenAI later moved to GPTs, which are custom versions of ChatGPT that anyone can build with instructions, files and connections to external services. Browsing and data analysis also became standard features. If you find an old article recommending a list of SEO plugins, most of those links are out of date.
Useful SEO tasks you can do in ChatGPT today
Keyword and question research
Ask ChatGPT to list the questions a buyer might ask at each stage, for example “questions a restaurant owner asks before buying a POS system”. Treat the output as ideas, then check real search data and your customer emails.
Analysing exports
Upload a CSV from your search console or crawler and ask for patterns: pages losing clicks, titles that are too long, duplicate meta descriptions. Always spot-check the results against the raw file.
Drafting structured content
Use it to draft FAQ sections, comparison tables or schema markup. Validate any markup with a proper testing tool before publishing.
Building a team GPT
A custom GPT loaded with your style guide and product facts can help writers produce consistent first drafts. It is private to the people you share it with.
What these tools cannot do
- They cannot “submit” your website to ChatGPT or add you to its answers.
- Publishing a public GPT about your company does not make ChatGPT recommend you in normal chats.
- They cannot see your true ranking in AI answers across many users and locations. You need repeated, structured prompt testing for that.
- They can invent facts. Every statistic or claim in a draft needs checking before it goes live.
Classic SEO tools still matter
When ChatGPT searches the web, it relies on search results, so pages that are indexed, fast and clearly written still have an advantage. Keep using a crawler, your search console and a rank tracker. Then add a layer for AI: tracking which prompts mention you and which sources AI assistants cite. Our list of tools for LLM citation tracking explains the options.
A practical workflow
Here is a simple monthly routine that combines ChatGPT’s tools with your own judgment. It takes a few hours and keeps your content focused on what buyers actually ask.
- List 30 real customer questions from sales calls and support tickets.
- Use ChatGPT to group them by topic and suggest missing questions.
- Check which of these questions your site already answers clearly.
- Draft new answer-first sections, then edit them by hand with your own expertise.
- Test the same questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity each month to see who gets mentioned.
Keep a log of each round so you can see which new pages coincide with more mentions over time. Correlation is not proof, but a steady pattern across many prompts is a useful signal.
