Which Business Listings Matter Most for AI Assistants
Not every directory is worth your time. Here is how to prioritise the business listings that AI assistants and the search engines behind them actually use.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
The business listings that matter most for AI assistants are the ones feeding the search and map systems they rely on: Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. After those come the review sites and directories that are trusted in your industry and country. A complete, accurate profile on a few important platforms is worth more than thin profiles on hundreds of minor ones.
Tier 1: The big three map platforms
These deserve your attention first.
- Google Business Profile feeds Google Search, Maps and Google’s AI features.
- Bing Places for Business feeds Bing and Microsoft products; Copilot uses Bing for web results.
- Apple Business Connect feeds Apple Maps and Siri on iPhones, iPads and Macs.
Fill every field: category, description, services, hours, photos, website, phone, attributes such as wheelchair access or parking. Choose categories carefully; they help systems understand what you are.
Tier 2: Industry-specific platforms
These often carry more weight for specific questions than general directories. Examples:
- Restaurants and hotels: TripAdvisor, booking and reservation platforms, local food guides.
- Health: national doctor directories and appointment platforms.
- Software: G2, Capterra and similar review and comparison sites.
- Trades: national trade directories, quote platforms and professional association member lists.
- Legal and financial: bar association or regulator registers and specialist directories.
When an assistant answers “best project management software for agencies”, it often draws on comparison sites. When it answers “plumber near me”, it relies more on map and local data.
Tier 3: Review platforms
Trustpilot, Yelp, Facebook reviews and sector review sites provide the independent opinions assistants summarise. Focus on the platform your customers already use; do not spread requests across too many. Respond to reviews, including negative ones, politely and factually. Never buy, swap or write fake reviews.

Tier 4: Local and community sources
Chamber of commerce member lists, town business directories, local tourism sites and event pages are useful confirmation that you exist and operate where you say. For a business in a smaller city, these can be some of the few independent pages that mention you.
How to fill a listing well
- Use exactly the same business name, address and phone everywhere.
- Write a factual description: what you do, for whom, where. Skip slogans.
- List your main services or products by name.
- Link to the most relevant page on your site, not always the homepage.
- Add recent photos and keep hours current, including holidays.
What to skip
Paid “submit to 500 directories” packages often create low-quality listings that are hard to maintain and can spread inconsistent data. Directories with no real visitors and no editorial standards add little. If you already have many old listings, clean up the important ones first. Our guide to directory listings for AI crawlers explains which signals crawlers look for, and Siri business listings covers Apple in depth.
How to know which listings matter for you
Ask assistants that show sources, like Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, the questions your buyers ask. Note which directories and review sites are cited. Those are your priority listings, because they are what assistants already use for your topic.
