Booking an AI Visibility Audit: What You Should Get
Before you book an AI visibility audit, know what a useful one covers, what to prepare, and what the final report should let you do next.
⚫ Millions ask AI daily ➜ 🔵 AI recommends YOU ➜ ⚫ Prospects visit your site ➜ 🔵 Convert to customers
A useful AI visibility audit shows how the main AI assistants answer the questions your buyers ask, where your brand appears or is missing, what they say about you, which competitors and sources they rely on, and a prioritised list of fixes. If the audit only gives you a score without the real answers behind it, ask for more.
What a good audit covers
- Prompt coverage: a list of realistic buyer questions, agreed with you, covering discovery, comparison and brand questions.
- Assistant coverage: answers from the assistants your audience uses, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews.
- Brand accuracy: whether the assistants describe your business, prices, locations and offers correctly.
- Competitor view: who appears instead of you, and how they are described.
- Source analysis: which websites are cited for your topics, and whether you are present on them.
- Technical check: whether your site can be crawled by the bots AI search features use, and whether key facts are in readable text.
- Action plan: a short, prioritised list of what to fix first.
How to prepare before booking
A little preparation makes the audit far more useful.
- Write down your top 10 buyer questions. Include location or niche where relevant: “orthodontist for adults in Strasbourg”, “inventory software for a small brewery”.
- Name your three main competitors, including any you lose deals to most often.
- Collect your official facts: legal name, addresses, hours, main products, price ranges.
- Note known problems, such as a customer who said ChatGPT gave them your old phone number.
- Decide who will act on the results. An audit nobody follows up is wasted.
What the final report should let you do
After reading the report, you should be able to answer: Which three changes will we make this month? Which pages will we create or update? Which listings or sources need attention? If the report leaves you unsure what to do next, ask the provider to turn findings into concrete tasks.
Warning signs of a weak audit
- Only one assistant is tested, or prompts are generic (“best company”).
- No raw answers or screenshots, only a score.
- Promises that the follow-up service will “guarantee” mentions.
- Claims of special access to AI companies or their training data.
- Recommendations to buy reviews, links or forum posts.
How long an audit takes
A focused audit for a small business with ten to twenty questions can usually be done in a few days. Larger companies with many products, markets or languages need more time, mainly because more prompts must be checked and answers vary between runs. Ask the provider how many times each prompt is tested, since a single run can give a misleading picture. Also ask whether you can keep the raw data, so you can repeat the same checks yourself later and compare.
One-off audit or ongoing tracking?
A one-off audit is a good starting point. But AI answers change as sources and models change, so many businesses move to monthly tracking after the first audit. If you want to understand the technical part in more depth first, read our AI content readiness audit guide. To learn how ongoing results are tracked, see measuring AI visibility.
