An AI content readiness audit checks whether your business is set up to be found, understood and cited by AI assistants. You can run a useful version in one working day: in the morning, test what assistants say and check technical access; in the afternoon, review key pages, business facts and outside reputation. You end the day with a scored list of fixes in order of impact.

Before You Start

Prepare a spreadsheet with five tabs: AI answers, Technical, Pages, Facts and Reputation. Give each check a score of 0 (missing), 1 (partial) or 2 (good). Choose one person to run the audit and one expert from the business to answer questions.

Morning, Part 1: What AI Says Today (90 minutes)

  1. Write 15 buyer questions, including two that name your brand directly.
  2. Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot.
  3. Record: are you mentioned, are facts correct, which competitors appear, which sources are cited.

Example for an accountancy firm in Nantes: “accountant for freelancers in Nantes”, “how much does an accountant cost for a small SAS”, “is [firm name] good”.

Morning, Part 2: Technical Access (60 minutes)

  • robots.txt allows search crawlers and your chosen AI crawlers.
  • Main pages show their text with JavaScript off.
  • A current XML sitemap exists and is submitted to Google and Bing.
  • Pages load quickly and work on mobile.
  • Basic structured data (Organization or LocalBusiness) is present and valid.

Afternoon, Part 1: Key Pages (90 minutes)

Review your homepage, about page and top five service or product pages. For each, score:

  • A clear answer in the first two sentences.
  • Specific facts: prices or ranges, areas, timelines.
  • Logical headings that match real questions.
  • Author or company expertise shown.
  • Last updated within the past year where facts change.

Afternoon, Part 2: Facts and Reputation (90 minutes)

  1. Compare name, address, phone, hours and description across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, main directories and social profiles.
  2. Check review volume and recency on the platform your industry uses most.
  3. Search for recent press or industry mentions and note whether they are accurate.
  4. Look at the sources AI cited in the morning: are you present on them?

End of Day: Prioritise (30 minutes)

Total each tab. Then sort fixes into three groups:

  • Blockers: crawl access problems or wrong facts in AI answers. Fix this week.
  • Quick wins: rewriting page openings, updating listings. Fix this month.
  • Longer projects: earning reviews and press, building topic depth. Plan over the quarter.

Re-run the morning tests every month to track change. The AI visibility metrics guide explains which numbers to follow.

When to Get Help

If the audit shows many technical blockers, involve your web developer. If the gaps are mostly content and reputation, a marketing lead or specialist service can help. Be cautious of anyone who turns an audit into a promise of guaranteed AI rankings.

Common Findings

Many first audits uncover the same handful of issues: a security setting blocking crawlers, an old address on a major directory, service pages without prices or areas, and few recent reviews. None is hard to fix, but together they explain why assistants often overlook a business.
